I write a 5,000 word short story every month for my writing circle, and they've never been fantasy. Typically just contemporary world scenes. The larger project is a novel manuscript, it would probably qualify as SF primarily, although it's also a detective murder mystery. I was originally going to add in some Afrofuturism, but decided that would be too ambitious and not marketable enough for a first novel attempt.
