So many questions are about stories in that genre? Just wondering.....Has anyone done a poll on this?
It seems like most of our young members are writing fantasy. Us older types are more varied, I think. I write a lot of science fiction, but I also like alternative history and the more exotic kinds of historical fiction. Anything other than the here-and-now, I guess. I get enough of the here-and-now watching the news or opening the front door.
None of mine are, I mostly write historical fiction. If people can forgive me, fantasy is mostly dreadful crap.
I write a mix. Plus when I do fantasy I tend to buck the trends - no Game of Thrones swordplay, no wizards or twists on myths. The stories I posted on here are a pretty eclectic bunch - 2 funny pieces, a few crime pieces, a few horrors, a children's story and a prison story - and this year I entered the sci-fi competition. Right now, I'm working on something about mystical worms.
most of mine have some kind of fantasy theme to them in some way, whether it be in Order Of The Black, where there are elves and dwarfs, twinsanity where there are talking snow foxes, or some of my others... in fact there is one piece of mine that is none of these, its a Fan Fiction that is based off of an album, which involves the band, but is more of a sci-fi/horror piece.
Mostly I write fiction. I want to make whatever I want up but I rarely delve into the fantasy with elves and wizards and whatnot. My stories are generally very fictitious and err on the side of sci-fi and light fantasy. I consider them more adventure novels, which can encompass any other genre really, or once about character growth/dealing with an environment.
Currently fantasy, but I've often thought about writing a romance or some kind of chicklit. Sometimes I think I'd like to try a detective/thriller.
I write general fiction. I've thought about maybe writing some sci-fi but never fantasy. I've never been a fan of fantasy in general. That's just a personal preference, of course.
I primarily write science fiction, and in some cases it blurs over to fantasy. My short story Blue would have to be classified as fantasy. Then again, I also write poetry and general fiction. But dragons and damsels, elves and evil phantoms, I have no interest in writing that kind of fantasy, even though I love the Tolkien tales.
define fantasy <_< Fantasy doesn't have to mean tolkien stuff like elves. technically pokemon is fantasy so wut exactly do you mean by fantasy?
Seems nobody likes elves and dragons and demsels and magick nowadays... I think I'm gonna put ALL of them in my next story
It annoys me when people say this nothing is cliche unless you make it cliche, and it's perfectly possible to make classic fantasy not cliche, just use a bit of imagination and make it original -_-
I guess you are kind of right, ezxalia, but mediaeval magic fantasy that is not cliche is hard to do. The only I know is Dragon age and elder scrolls.
Hmmm I write more urban fantasy then high fantasy. But I also like writing crime, mysteries and coming age style stories to. All depends on my mood. Like at the moment I don't have any desire to write fantasy but I probably will later this month or next.
Yes people over do tropes in classic fantasy, but just because they do doesn't mean you have to. For me fantasy is the funnest to write because you literally can do anything you want.race of talking ducks? why not? it really isn't that limiting, people just think it's limiting because dragons and elves are so over done -_- I don't get why people don't do more with the genre, it''s so easy to make an original fantasy story due to all the freedom it brings, I guess some people just don't like change (shrugs)
I write fantasy at the moment because that's the most developed idea I have. And it's the one I'm miserable unless I'm getting it down on paper. I write whichever story I feel I have to get onto paper regardless of gender. After all that's why I write in the first place. However I do have a few other ideas for after I finish my current project the most developed being a sci fi I plan to start writing for NaNoWriMo this year.
It could be just a force of habit. You grow up with dragons and elves, you will end up writing about dragons and elves. Notably you saw/read about them and that kickstarted your imagination into something similar using what you experienced. Also, a fun note, is that medieval times are highly romanticized in many aspects and quite different from what we expect from our modern daily life. It gives us the sense of a better place and time right off the bat. Heroes, conquering obstacles, evil, royalty, all the good stuff we miss.
I like Erotic Fantasy. Dwarves and frost giants doing the nasty is sooo hot. Honestly I think there is a lot of crime/suspense novels being written just as much as fantasy.
