Is there a word for this?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by WhiteKnight75, Dec 2, 2017.

Hi, I wasn't sure where else to put this.
My question is: Is there a word for that noise you make when you try not to laugh but are caught of guard and kind of do anyway so it comes out all weird? And if not what other word would you use?
I do hope someone get's what I mean...

"Death rattle," maybe, depending on who you're trying not to laugh at.

snigger: a smothered or half-suppressed laugh.

But . . . yeah. Snicker might work better. Snigger sounds very Draco-Malfoy, if you know what I mean. Snicker's practically the same, though it's usually a bit more malicious.

Don't be afraid to use two words. "Smothered chortle" or some such thing.
