The books I write never end up where I intend them. My action/adventure turned into a fantasy lol, my comedy slapstick is now an incredibly dark story etc Personally i love all genres, something that I can be transported with and be in the story.
A few people want a beautifully crafted artifact, some people want a ripping yarn, in their favourite genre. Others just want a good laugh, or graphic images of violence (sorry to say), or sex. It depends what you are into--everyone is different, as posters have pointed out. BUT there's no point in thinking, 'Oh, an e.g. bodice ripper has this, this, and this in it, easy. I'll go ahead and write one of those.' You need to read plenty of your chosen genre and then set to work in a frame of mind as far as possible removed from cynicism or p**s-taking as possible. If you are merely in it for the money, or you think it's easier than writing more highbrow stuff, you will fail--tired experience speaking here. Even 'bad writing' can succeed if it has that certain something to it which makes the work stand out from the others in the slush pile (we'll not have a talk about Twilight etc again here I guess!) Fantastic writing can still miss mass reader appeal--it can be plain boring, too demanding on the average reader, etc etc.
I truly believe there isn't a correct answer to this question... The answer will be different for each person that you ask. We all have different tastes. I would suggest that if you want to practise writing, the best way to go is by writing what you enjoy... If you are writing something you personally feel passionate and excited about, it will translate into your work and it will be easier to hook a reader.
Don't even think about other people. Concentrate on writing what you want to write. When the writing is done, then think about publication or whatever it is you have in mind. Otherwise you're simply getting ahead of yourself.
