It's the apocalypse, and you can only save three films. Which ones?

Temple of Doom was superior to the Last Crusade. Anyway I'd rather watch the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad films than the Indiana Jones movies.

Temple of Doom was barely superior to something you might scrape from your sole after a walk in the dog park. An incredibly annoying kid in tow, who Indy should have launched from the first high cliff they came across, and a woman almost as bad.

The dorky banter and stupid jokes of Ford/Connery in Last Crusade are more annoying than that kid. He should have sacrificed his dad to Kali.

I loved ToD when I saw it as a kid - it was the epitome of a Speilberg film for me back then. It's only with age, cynicism, bitterness and misery I've grown to dislike it so much.

Almost none of these movies hold up for me as an adult. Star Wars sucks too, unless there's a lot of weed

I can only think of my three fave movies as a kid, but I guess they'll do to cheer me up during the apocalypse:

    The 'Burbs
    Tremors
    The Goonies

These don't rank in my top 10, but I do like them, and find them very rewatchable:

    The Iron Giant
    The Road to El Dorado
    The Prince of Egypt

With selfish intentions and not for the sake of the future of humanity:

    Donnie Darko
    American History X
    8 Mile

In preferred order. American Gangster was a tough one to leave out. I love Gaspar Noe, Lars Von Trier and Michael Haneke but any of their films would make my chances of survival low.

Requiem for a Dream would put an end to my survival in the fallout as quickly as Martyrs (2004).

Two good films there, in DD and 8M. When I first saw DD I couldn't believe it wasn't made in the 80s. Can't remember now if it was set in the 80s or they were simply going for an 80s vibe, but whichever they nailed it.

Yeah think Donnie Darko came out around 2000, the soundtrack was great too. Jake Gylenhaal could never live up to that film after. Zodiac was good though.

Those are not necessarily my favorite movies, but I think together they would give a decent overview of humanity's cultural achievements overall and are thus worth being preserved.

not a pro, yet very curious
up to approximately 5 years back I would be able to name movies I thought would be worth saving for future humanity and know I could watch them over and over for the rest of my life. Now I feel dry . . .

    I will think about it.

    I'd need some variety--

    The Philadelphia Story (1940), comedy
    Seven Samurai (1954), drama
...and probably a horror film for the third, but I'd have to think a while to decide on which one.

    The Aviator

Hard to resist adding Serenity. Maybe I can sneak it in concealed in a cheese sandwich.
