Joining this forum for a precise purpose

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Kamisama420, Sep 23, 2010.

    Hi there,

I'm Kami, nice to meet you. I'm French-Canadian, been living in Japan for the past 3 years, I'm 24 years-old and currently a teacher in Elementary Schools.

I'm joining these boards for a reason, and that is to test a novel-game system created for forum users that I came up with recently. A second reason would be to improve my English, as it is my second language.

In any case, I'm glad to be here with you guys. I'll probably stop and read some stuff here and there. Please stop by the RPG section and check out my post, see if you're interested in giving the project a try.

    Cheers,
    Kamisama

Hello Kami, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Sorry, but having seen your RPG proposal, it doesn't sound right for this site. This is a writing site, and the RPG area is no exception. Your voting-based RPG is not oriented toward the players writing complex, creative responses.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    Hi Kami and welcome.

I think you'll enjoy yourself, and there is a lot of English-speakers here, including myself.

    :)

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

Sadly, following Cogito's post, I don't believe I'll be staying. As the title of my message says, I was joining this forum for that purpose. Not being able to go along with it makes it almost irrelevant (I'm already on multiple other writing forums). I just wanted to test the concept on a larger scale.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand why my post was rejected. This forum seems the most professional writing forum I've seen so far, and as such, the rules and goals are more thoroughly protected. That's the way this forum works, I respect that. Also please don't think bad of me for being so selfish, I know I am, but time is also an issue, and reading and reviewing others' works without mine being shown... I'm sure you can see how that could be a bit one-sided.

So, I wish you all good luck in the future, I hope you work gets discovered, don't give up and be safe.

I'll come back a few times to see if there are any replies to this.

P.S. Cogito, I don't intend to be published. Being published for a concept built especially for forum users is, I believe, still unheard of. I don't see how it could work. But thank you for trying to warn me.

I'm sorry to hear we don't have much to offer in your case. Our RPG section is not really that heavily populated by active members anyway, so I hope you do find a site that will suit your specific needs better.

Thanks man. But seriously, that's really hard to do, because in my case, I'm mixing two things that are not typically mixable; gaming and reading.

For some reason, gamers usually don't read, and readers usually don't game. Don't ask me the physics of that concept, I have no idea why it is so, but it seems like an unwritten rule.

So yea, I'm having a bit of a hard time finding a nest, but hey, with time, I'll find it, no worries.
