Jerry looked at Grell and gave a small smile. He patted him on the back [In a decidedly manly and brotherly style] and said, "Friends."

Fitz found himself outside, surrounded by flaming zombettes. They didn't run or scream or anything. They just walked... that slow zombie-walk, as if they weren't on fire at all. "D**n. Why won't they stop, drop, and roll!?" he yelled, tossing away the empty spray can. "What do they teach kids these days?"

He drew his sword and charged into the pack. The toasted zombettes were harder to slice. It was like cutting beef jerky. "Screw this," he said, ignoring them. It just wasn't fun anymore.

He started to head back toward the school, wondering what was taking Grell and Jerry so long. The moment he did, they emerged from the front door, embraced in brotherly love. "Holy homosaurus! What the f**k is this?"

Jerry winked at Fitz and began to say something cheeky to him when he saw the burning zombies.
"You know, they don't feel that. It just turns them into a walking fire. They could burn down the whole city."

'Poor, poor, Jerry. Your understanding of these things is so limited. The zombettes never leave the schoolyard," Fitz said, as though he pitied his ignorance. Even as he said this, one was crossing the street, wandering near a parked car on the other side of the road. "They'll burn out in a couple of minutes and everything will be fine. Trust me, it's no big deal." The car caught fire. "So... where's this hospital everyone's talking about?"

    The car exploded.

Sarah watched, still a little stunned as something of a fight broke out. She shifted the rifle, holding it with two hands in case she needed to bring it up. It was a clash of many interested personalities, many of which she doubted were completely stable mentally. The other woman there seemed to be the voice of reason in the midst of all these bickering, testosterone-minded men.

They made mention of going to the hospital. If they were heading north, it'd be a good idea, and she would know what to get and where to find it.

"If you're going to the hospital, I'm coming. But, more important than that, where are you all going? Once you leave the city, I mean."

She let Dirk walk away. It wasn't the first time he'd had a gun shoved in his face.

"But, more important than that, where are you all going? Once you leave the city, I mean."

"North. Not sure where exactly." She spoke to the young woman while watching Dirk sulk in the corner, as alone as she'd let him get. "Heard a rumor..."

McGee darted out of the room, make-shift flamethrower leading the way. He's going to set the school on fire, she thought.

    "You're really a doctor?"

Sarah nodded at the woman's response, trying to ignore the man yelling as he ran past her packing a lighter and an aerosol can.

    "You're really a doctor?"

    Sarah hesitated a little.

"Not officially." She admitted. "I was working on my MD when the attacks started. I don't recognize any of you from my classes, so I'm imagine I'm the closest you have to a doctor."

Kaeila nodded. "You are," she said simply. Finally, the thought, someone with a decent head on their shoulders. "So the hospital then?" She looked around the room, faint scent of smoke in the air. "Looks like the school might be burning down so...."

She was interrupted by a huge boom. An explosion.

"Gritze decided the thems weren't as important as his belly, so the dragon went eating the hatched bannanas," Grell said.
Grell stared at his barell of his gun.
"I wonder what happens when you get shot by an egg dispenser,"

"I have a car parked outside with some stuff in it. I can take a few passengers if I have to."

Smoke began to filter in, and she crouched reflexively as an explosion rocked the ground. Yes, they needed to get out.

Smoke was pouring in now. Sulking time is over, she thought.

Kaeila opened the cafeteria door, fire was tearing apart the walls, roaring more near the exit at the end of the hall. They'd need to find another way out.

Grabbing her blades in one hand and Dirk in the other, she made her way around the tables and chairs and into the kitchen. She didn't even think about grabbing any food.

But that door was stuck, and though she pushed with all her strength, it wouldn't budge.

"S***!" she yelled, banging the door. "Go back"

I had been following rather quitely. Both of the women had seemed oblivious of my advances earlier and with the fire and zombie kids, I decided to give it a rest till later. I quickly replaced the one round I had fired with another as I followed the woman leading the way. "S***!" she yelled, banging the door. "Go back"

I was near the back so I turned and led the way myself now, not sure where to go but knowing that I didn't want to become the human torch. At least not in the way it seemed that I was going to become him.

    "Great," he said.

Zombie kids and flames? You couldn't write this type of thing up. He would have to write it after they survived, GOD willing. He followed Jake after Kaeila alerted them that the door was a no-go. He looked at Kaeila, and took her hand and spoke to her softly.

"Do I mistreat you? Are you unhappy working for me?"

His tone was calm, but very serious. He had it with Phoenix, or wherever the hell he was. The people he was around, besides Jake and Kae, made little to no sense. But Grell might have been on to something, at least the way others see Dirk. So he figured he'd ask her what she thought about her situation.

"Do I mistreat you? Are you unhappy working for me?"

She held back onto his hand. Though she'd usually shrug him off, he needed this now. Kaeila was perhaps the only one who could see beyond his hard eyes, to the boy inside, though neither would ever talk about something like that.

"Money hasn't been worth anything for a long time," she said, trying to smile. Skipping around the answer, she hoped he'd get the basic idea - that she was here to stay. She was a professional, and even as the world engulfed in death around them, she would not forget her oath. To protect him, no matter what the enemy.

He was a little clueless. Probably from speaking weirdo since he got here, but he was having difficulty understanding what Kaeila was saying. He took his hood and hat off to look at her.

"Soooo... I'm... not paying you enough?" he asked her with his eyebrows raised.

He looked down and thought for a second and looked up with his eyes a little wider.

    "You ARE unhappy, aren't you?"

She sighed with a smile. Shaking her head, she replied. "No, what I mean is..." She was having trouble verbalizing the thought, as though it would make everything finally real. "You're not paying me anymore. I'm just here. Because you need me, and..."

Kaeila finished the thought in her head. 'because I need you,' she thought. Finishing that sentence aloud would bring hellfire of a different sort, as if Dirk wasn't enough of a flirt before.

Kaeila had grown rather attatched to him in the last few years she'd been his guard, more of a family than she'd ever had. Before accepting the job, she'd been at the end of her rope, a useless drone of society. Had she not been Dirk's protector when the zombie outbreak occurred, she would have let herself die long before. But now she had a reason to live, he gave her a reason...

Flames licked the edge of the door, windows their last escape. Very few were broken surprisingly. She took off her coat, wrapped it around her arm and smashed the window. Raking the glass off the wooden inlays so that no one got cut, Kaeila then turned the coat inside out and laid it across the bottom, so that they could each crawl through as unharmed as possible.

He was ready to free her of him if she had wished it. With everyone who wanted to be in his entourage, he didn't want someone who didn't want in. It was almost as if time stood still after Dirk asked if she was truly unhappy. He liked having her around, and at the parties, he could act an ass and know that someone professional had his back. But he liked to think they were also friends. He kept a very small circle of people he trusted, and made her way into that circle very fast. All this was bouncing around in his mind until she answered after what seemed an eternity.

She sighed with a smile. Shaking her head, she replied. "No, what I mean is..." She was having trouble verbalizing the thought, as though it would make everything finally real. "You're not paying me anymore. I'm just here. Because you need me, and..."

He wasn't sure if she paused or stopped. The look on her face said, "come on, Dirk, you know what I'm saying." He didn't quite get it, but he nodded anyway.

"Okay, well I'm glad you're here. Thank you for being here," he said to Kaeila.

Now what the hell did she mean? Was she not getting her checks? He would have to fire Walter if they got out of this alive. His thinking was interrupted by glass smashing, he looked up and it was her, his guardian angel. She had smashed some glass to create an exit.

    "So who's first?"

Once Jason had regained his composure, he realized he was screwed over.
"Damn survivors. I knew I should of shot them" he said to himself. The school was nearly ablaze. He let him self down, slowly. He took our his rifle, shouldered it, and slowly walked to the back entrance. Those damn survivors were about to climb out. He slung the rifle, drew his Glock, and went down into a crouch. He crouch-walked nearly to the window. A woman was talking. He stood up, looking into the window. There were more survivors now.
"So, the heat wave hit you too?" he said. He always liked to have a smart thing to say, like in the movies.

Jerry gently pushed the barrel of Grell's gun away from his face. "The same thing that happens to the...thems will happen to you."
As they walked, Jerry began to notice their shadows were growing. Behind him, the school had caught fire and flames were spreading.
"Jesus, Fitz." He saw several small zombies shambling around, wreathed in flames. They must have set the school on fire. He suddenly had a horrible thought. What if the others couldn't make it out? He was about to suggest going back when he remembered Grell. He had been invaluable so far, and he didn't want to make him any more unstable than he already was. "How far is the hospital?"

"Jesus, Fitz," Jerry said, looking back at the burning school.

"When the grass is cut, the snakes will show," Fitz said. "Where will Mr. Sniper hide now?" He laughed maniacally. The zombettes were beginning to fall over. Their burnt limbs could no longer support them. "All according to plan," he said. "All according to plan."

"So, the heat wave hit you too?"

She turned quickly with her gun drawn, but as his rifle rested on his shoulder, she did not point the weapon at him.

"How did you...?" she began. "The door." She looked back at the glass filled coat. What a waste.

He tilted his head at the sniper.

    "Hmmm," he said thoughtfully.

He rubbed his temples and eyes a little before refocusing on the sniper with his rifle up.

"Heat wave? Yo dawg, that wasn't no heat wave," he said shaking his head.

He hoped this guy wasn't like Fitz and Grell. Actually, he hoped he wasn't like Grell, because he might kill a man this time.

"I...took a shortcut" he said, with a smile, "This time, I will not kill you all. I've got a decent bit of guns and ammo, and a vehicle worth using. It's in front. Anyone who has a decent rifle, knows how to drive aggressively, and isn't annoying as hell, can come with me."
    He looked at them.
"And by the way, I'm ex-Army. I never trained to be a medic, so let's get out of here before you get burned."

I joined kept my pistol down but ready, having pretended to be somewhere else while Lura Croft tried to be nice to my thick skulled friend. Still I didn't want to be the one to explain he was broke, it'd mean admitting I was too. The heat must have been getting to me because I had an overwhelming urge to shoot the sniper. With a bit of luck I might be able to convince one of the surviving women that I was the better choice to repopulate the world. This sniper seemed more the bodyguards type.

Ex-Army, she thought, that explains a lot.

She nodded to the others, then brushed past the sniper to the door. Once outside, she could see to the parking lot, to the burning car.

"So where's the car, army boy?" she asked.
