"Get down," Fitz said as Kaeila and the others approached. "I believe there's a gentleman with a firearm in that bus," he said, pointing to one parked at the other end of the lot. "He can see us... but we can't see him... a sniper perhaps. Though I can't imagine what sort of villainous fellow would want to shoot survivors. It's positively barbaric."

As he spoke, he worked at getting the doors of the shortbus open, all the while keeping his head down. "Negotiation isn't my strong point. I suggest we get this thing going and be on our way before Mr. Sniper gets trigger-happy."

I got out and followed as always until I heard the magic word, sniper. I looked at our fearless leader for guidance. Not much that can be done about a sniper. I draw my pistol anyways.

Kaeila immediately went into a crouch, and brought Dirk down with her. Until they were ‘safely’ behind the bus, she didn’t let him up again.

“Where?” she asked McGee in a whisper, peering around the side with her gun drawn. She set the box on the ground, to stablize the gun with her right hand. She couldn't see much of anything though.

Sarah pulled the car from the residence and made her way from the city proper. She hoped that perhaps the suburbs would be a little less freak-infested. The Impala handled well, and whoever had owned it had taken care of it. It was clean except for few things on the back dash. Her rifle stood against the passenger seat, the butt resting on the floor mat. The camo duffel bag containing her ammo and hunting outfit sat in the back seat. She wished she'd have thought of putting some food in it. Even if she didn't feel at all like eating, it didn't mean she'd stay that way forever.

She made it to the suburbs, seeing nothing of the creatures but a few distant flickers of movement. She sped up whenever she saw anything of the sort.

Eventually she passed into yet another residential area. And again she saw movement, but it was not, the slow, seemingly clumsy movement of the zombies. There were people over there. People who weren't infected. Survivors like her. They seemed to be interested in the busses. She pulled her Impala into the school parking lot, snatched up her gun from the seat next to her, and opened her door.

Jason hit the "Talk" button again.

"Well, it seems you've brought friends. Assure me your all not idiots and drop your guns. Show me your hands, and you'll be allowed to leave or join me with a bullet in your brain."

Jason folded up the bipod and prepared to get off the roof of the school and down to meet his new friends.

A car pulled up, and a woman got out, heading their way. Kaeila even pointed her gun towards the woman, but quickly realized her fault and lowered it again. She motioned to the woman, trying to show her to get low to the ground, but it was dark. Kaeila peered around the bus again.

"Well, it seems you've brought friends. Assure me your all not idiots and drop your guns. Show me your hands, and you'll be allowed to leave or join me with a bullet in your brain."

She recognized that it was radio, and the man was not on the bus. Even worse, a sniper could be hiding anywhere. Kaeila wasn’t about to drop her gun though, not with zombies wandering about everywhere.

A shiny new car sped into the lot, screeching to a stop a few feet away from them. A door opened and out stepped a black-haired woman with a scoped rifle in hand.

The sniper! Fitz thuoght. But... no... it was a man's voice he'd heard earlier. He was suddenly overcome with confusion. Then, as if to answer all his questions, the disembodied voice spoke again.

"Well, it seems you've brought friends. Assure me your all not idiots and drop your guns. Show me your hands, and you'll be allowed to leave or join me with a bullet in your brain."

Fitz was good at discerning movement of any sort, even in total darkness. He'd lived on the streets for a long time. "Come down you vile villain!" he called into the night air, pointing to the shadowy figure on the rooftop. "I can see you."

She she looked about, she noticed that those she had seen moving about earlier had now ducked down. She could see one of the figures motioning to her. Not waving her over, and not a wave of greeting...

    Down. Get down.

Sarah instantly ducked into a crouched position and scooted up against a bus, holding the rifle. There was danger, then? More zombies coming?

I watch the new woman approach as I obeyed the voice calling out to the new beauty. "Hello there angel." I said with a smile. "It might not be safe over here at the moment we've got a phyco with a gun." I cast lord nutters a glance and smirk. "Oh an a sniper. That is unless you really are my gardian angel?" "

Kaeila rolled her eyes so hard they almost got stuck in the back of her head. It was a blessing for her, though. At least the boys had someone new to pester, and from what she could see of the woman, a more appropriate age.

    'Those bastards.'
Jerry ran down the street as fast as he could and dived [dove?] behind a dumpster. 'Down the street, left, then right.' Jerry thought. 'That's real clear.'
He looked up over the edge of the dumpster and spied a map display stand that had been knocked through the window of a travel agency. He ran to it and rifled through the many maps on the ground. Most of them were wet and rotting, but Jerry managed to find one mostly undamaged. He opened it up and tried to get his bearings.
'I'm on Cockburn road, so...left on 3rd and a right onto Hooker Avenue. Right, that's easier.' [Note: These are street names from my home town.]
Jerry cried out as a cold, clammy hand brushed against the back of his head. He spun around and jumped backwards simultaneously, a move right out of ballet.
He pulled his hatchet out from his belt and held it above his head and...hesitated.
The hand belonged to a young woman, barely older than twenty. She had already partially decayed, but he could see hints of beauty from her past life. She had reminded him of someone, but he couldn't think of who. Grimacing in disgust of what he knew he had to do, he brought the hatchet down on her head with all his might just as the beginnings of a moan escaped from her lips. A dull thunk and crack sounded as the hatchet imbedded itself into her brain an inch. He let go and her body collapsed like a ragdoll, the hatchet protruding from her head in an almost comical fashion. He sighed, then put his foot on her neck and pulled the hatchet free in a squeal of bone against metal.
Something still bothered him. He turned her over and examined her face for a moment before he realized who she reminded him of. Except for the color of her hair, she was the spitting image of the woman he had promised to put out of her misery. He drew in a sharp breath and stepped back. He hadn't been able to kill her after knowing her as a human, but he hadn't hesitated at all with someone he had never known. That scared him. He was getting desensitized to killing. They wouldn't hesitate to kill him, he knew, but these people probably had families, husbands, wives, friends. How would they feel if they saw him kill their little baby girl. The thought chilled him.
    * * *
Jerry stopped and put his hands on his knees, panting. He wasn't used to running this much, and the few weeks he'd spent sitting in the dairy cooler hadn't helped. He had stopped behind a large Comcast Digital Cable van [It's Comcastic!] parked in the school parking lot [not the bus parking lot]. As he tried to catch his breath, he heard a car coming down the street. It pulled over and a beautiful woman stepped out with a rifle. She looked over towards the buses, at something he couldn't see, then quickly ducked down behind her car. Jerry looked around, trying to find any source of danger, but failed.
Then, a voice, sounding through the schools P.A. system rang out. "Well, it seems you've brought friends. Assure me you're not all idiots and drop your guns. Show me your hands and you'll be allowed to leave or join me with a bullet in your brain."
Jerry saw Fitz stand up pointed towards the roof of the school. Jerry looked at the roof and saw a figure up there, illuminated by the dim night sky. "Come down you vile villain! I can SEE you!"
Jerry's eyes scoured the building and saw a fire escape ladder that led to the roof. It seemed to be the only way up. He spied a dumpster right beside it and formulated a plan. He ran as quick as he could, ducking behind cars and shrubs and hid behind the dumpster in the shadows, practically invisible he kept his eye fixed on the top of the roof and slowly withdrew his knife and gripped it tightly, holding it with the hilt down, meaning to use it as a bludgeon to knock the sniper out.
Sure, the guy was threatening his friends, but he's still human.

Sarah was at first relieved to hear a voice call out to her. But immediately on hearing exactly what the words were saying, she was annoyed. Inwardly, she groaned. She'd have to be keeping company with one of those. Apparently human companionship had its price. But, she was willing to put up with it...within reason. If he got too forward about it, she'd find a way to shut him up.

For now, news of a sniper had her heart pulsing. She had no clue if she was in his sights or not. All she could do was sit tight and pray she wasn't.

She waited, feeling the effects of lack of sleep all over again. Kaeila closed her eyes and breathed out sharply. Her breath was warm, ready to bring her into slumber.

    A moan…

Kaeila shook herself awake again. Looking around, she saw the children, the tiny undead, coming for them. Something about it was just wrong, but as they grew ever nearer, she would have to put away her apprehensiveness.

She traded the .44 for the smaller gun in her pocket. She let the small zombies inch forward, still not firing. Her hesitation wouldn’t last long, though. She had to protect the ones alive.

A moan got my attention and I glanced over at the approaching zombie kids. "Why don't you demonstrate that greatness you bragged about?" I taunted lord nutters. It'd save me the trouble. I raised my gun in that direction.

"Why don't you demonstrate that greatness you bragged about?"

"Slaughtering children is your idea of greatness, I suppose," Fitz said, drawing his other six-shooter. Chopping up kids with a rusty sword just wasn't his style. He had two duct-tape bandoliers around his waist with nearly a hundred rounds in all. But the eleven shots he had between the two guns would be more than enough to handle this.

"If you want to impress a lady, I suggest you make yourself useful," he said. "Empty words fool no one." He fired into the horde, felling more than a few zombie children. If nothing else, it was good target practice.

Jason noticed that not many of the survivors were taking to his threats kindly. He had noticed one that wasn't particularly afraid of the death from above. Jason set up the bipod once again, layed down once again, and look through the sights, once again. He saw a small horde of...children attacking the survivors. Not to be a total idiot, Jason decided to help out. He hit the "Talk" Button again.
"Survivors, it appears you are being attacked by infected. I can either provide support or I can make it easier for them to devour you. Your choice. If you want me to help, which I presume you do, make your way towards the entrance of the school. I will activate the generator and lights will turn on. I have blocked off the entrance to the second floor, which has access to the roof. Your choice."
Jason's finger went to the trigger.

Red dress and matching shoes, brown hair with a bow, only a child, too young to die and be undead. Kaeila shook her head and pulled the trigger. The kids, zombettes as McGee would put it, were coming upon them like a flood… a flood of rotting undead trying to eat them.

So he just wanted to know we weren’t hostile… Can’t be too careful, I guess, thought Kaeila.

“What’ll it be?” she asked no one in particular, shooting another. “Go in and possibly get killed or stay out here and definitely die?”

She knew McGee wouldn’t have keys, but maybe they could be somewhere in the school. Not that there was much hope for it, but the busses were parked in an interesting way, like how they line up in front when kids go on field trips. They were even re-numbered, printed on white paper and taped to the windows.

She was wasting her ammo. Kaeila picked up the box and tore it open. Taking both awkward blades in her hands, she said, “Stay back.” She didn’t want to accidentally hit one of them.

Jerry watched as the zombie children began to mass around the group. They would be overrun if he didn't do something. His mind raced. He knew they had to get out, but he didn't...
His wildly seeking eyes landed on a garage of sorts, a garage large enough for a bus.
'Bingo,' he thought. If there keys anywhere, that's where they'd be.
Jerry made his way towards the bus garage, weaving his way around various obstacles; bushes, rocks, the occasional corpse. He stayed in the shadows most of the time, but they didn't last forever. He reached the edge of the school and eyed the gap between the school and bus garage with apprehension. It was clear of zombies, for the meantime, but there was still the issue of the sniper on the roof. He looked back towards where he had seen him last. The rooftop was devoid ofmovement. He took a deep breath and began to run to the garage, hatchet in hand.

The group was stirring. Something wasn't right. Sarah's body didn't move, though her eyes ranged wildly over the building, looking for the threat she knew was there.

She heard a sound, growing closer, that sent a shiver up her spine. More zombies coming. But; the lifeless moans were different this time. They appeared, and Sarah realized to her horror that they were children. Innocent children, taken by this cursed infection. Some of the others opened fire on them, but Sarah couldn't bring herself to. Tears streamed down her face as she watched, the mingled bitterness of disgust and compassion flowing through her.

"A perplexing dilemma, madame. A king needs his castle, but a queen such as yourself needs her chariot. Decisions, decisions," he said, rubbing his chin. "To the sturdy walls of the citadel that stands before us, or to the mobile confines of this yellow steed? I know not which. Lead and I shall follow."

He put away his depleted pistols and retrieved his sword. There was no time to reload right now. In the meantime, he noticed the young lady who had recently joined them was crying. "Even the angels weep for these lost souls," he said, mostly to himself, before turning to her. "Cry not, sweet princess. I too lament the loss of their innocence, but someone such as yourself should not be touched by the wetness of tears. Sugar melts."

Another voice called out to her, one much more dramatic than the one that had yelled to her before.

"Cry not, sweet princess. I too lament the loss of their innocence, but someone such as yourself should not be touched by the wetness of tears. Sugar melts."

Were she not scared to the point of insanity, and tormented by her own emotions, she would have probably cocked an eyebrow. But strangely, the words held a sort of comfort that helped lessen her fear a little. She reached up and wiped the fluid from her eyes, trying to regain her composure and keep alert.

She needed to get over there with them. If only to be near them. Whatever the danger was...was death really worse than this reality?

She jumped to her feet and dashed toward the group.

"When the eraser came all down on Mr. Jenkins the farmer the voting system was never the same," Grell said, "For how many more miles can you go without dying...death is such an essay escape its like making a pie."
Grell stared at the sky and looked at the fairies for only a moment. Fairies seemed so sublime.

Twirling the two double blades, Kaeila attacked her attackers with great force. She saw them closing in on the woman from the car. Carving a path of dead undead, she made it to the other woman.

Kaeila could see she had been crying. She nodded for the woman to come, follow her.

"I guess it's into the school. Come on," she urged the others. Too many out here. I need the rest, she thought.

She led the group, keeping distance, but making sure no zombie neared Dirk.

"Hey," she shouted at the man running into the garage. "Whoever you are, if you don't want to get left out, Come on!" She may be a reluctant protector, but she wouldn't leave anyone behind, out in the night to die.

I had refreigned from firing through the short lived, futile battle and finally we got moving. I took aim at a zombie between us and the school and fired. The bullet ripped through the zombie kid's neck, fired low but the shot killed it none the less and struck another zombie kid a bit further back in the leg, the zombie was now crawling towards the group as I now ran to catch up with the moving group. "And that's why I love this gun." I said loudly mainly to myself.
