I know it may be a fantasy but im covering all the basis anyways so im fully informed, not going in blindly and can make a good decistion on the if i should allow book returns, because im thinking of a life time not short term. 1 I read the ingram it seemed to imply that i will be charged the full wholesale price.if the bookstore buys it at whole sale price where does that money go,if a return happens does ingram pay back what they were paid leaveing me with less than whole sale as my responsibility 2 how long is the return period 180 days? 3 what is the miniumum costs for printing, shipping and handleing a book to a store my book is just over 210 pages(so double sided is 105 pages) at a 6x9 size(the theoretical minimum price with 0 royalties, with no publisher involved and non exclusive) 4im still thinking of pursueing a free editor because my book is a chrisitian teaching book. so its not a story that needs its story fixed, but just basic things like sentance structure, and the like fixed. I self edited my book 2-3 times, i think i worked out a bit of the rough spots already. i just want obvious errors fixed(obvious to a professional), 5 as you stated before "no one legit wants to steal your book" do you think there are free editors/ free lawyers out there that are not legit and would try to steal the book 6 is there no way at all to limit the amount of returns (like 7), is there an option where i have to approve extream quantities, i dont like the idea of some bookstore can order whatever they want then dump the price back on me (like if walmart ordered 10,000 copies (lol) ) do big operations like barnes and nobels and the such work differently or do they just return a ton all at once sticking me with insain bills.(humor me)(this will probaly not happen but i still like to figure out all the angles, there is a very slim chance) 7. if i chose not to do returns is that bad for the exposure of my book, (i just dont want to run into a nightmare senerio of extreame returns especially since i dont make anything on the sales) again im just covering all the bases so im informed, even if its complete fantasy, i dont like to assume anything 8my thoughts are that maybe because i make my book really cheap that it would make it more appealing to sellers and buyers because its not 20 dollars but maybe 5-7
Bookstores aren't going to carry your book, dude. It's just as likely to be carried on Saturn. You'll never have to worry about returns.
The wholesale price is the price the bookseller pays Ingram. If the book is returned, that's how much Ingram refunds to the bookseller. There is no way that Ingram is going to be paid less than the wholesale price, or that they will refund less than the wholesale price. The following is from the link big soft moose provided a couple of posts back: "Below" has two options: The first is that the books are returned to Ingram, and then Ingram ships them to you. Ingram deducts from your royalties the full wholesale price of each book, plus $2 per book for shipping and handling. The second choice is that you don't want to have returns sent to you. In that case the book store ends them to Ingram, and Ingram destroys them. You are on the hook for the original wholesale price of the book (the amount Ingram has to refund to the bookseller), but there is no additional charge for shipping & handling.
most of your questions are answered by the ingram link i posted... and free editors and free lawyers are likely to be worth what you pay for them... my strong inclination is to pay an editor. (you don't normally need a lawyer to publish a book) the only way to limit returns is to elect not to accept them... which will make it even more unlikely that anyone will stock them... if you elect to accept them you can't limit the number
1 do you know of other print od printers that are in other parts of the world, because i want the price to be just as low in europe as it is in the usa, so the buyer doesnt have to pay big shipping fees and returns, shipped locally. 2 if i did the work that a publisher does of advertiseing my own book, would then it potentially get in places like a book store if i contacted choice bookstores im intersted in(regional ones, not major ones), does that make it happen maybe, this is a christian topic non fictional, that is a self help book
1) Not really - the major POD players are KDP Print Ingram spark and Lulu (lulu use ingram to do their printing)... there may be other minor players in each country but i'm not aware of any serious ones 2) I'd taken it for granted that you'd be advertising your book... but it still won't get racked by bookstores because they have no reason to think it will sell... you could contact individual independent bookstores and try to persuade them to take your book... but be prepared to be told no a lot... also given that you are worried to the point of paranoia about returns why would you want bookstores to rack it anyway?
im researching what im getting myself into and weighing the risks to make a decision on how to proceed, i hear you on the likelihood of bookstores stocking them but out of curiosity i did a quick calculation from ingram of how much it would cost to print and ship my book and it came up with this for a singular person sale, so this is not a calc for a bookstore, but what of these costs would i be responsible for if i had book returns from a book store print book $ 3.95 Handling Fee $ 1.99 Subtotal $ 5.94 Shipping $ 4.05 Tax $ 0.60 Total $ 10.59
Nope - the costs you are responsible for are the wholesale price you set plus the handling fee if you want the book returned to you... you can also choose not to have the book returned in which case you are only charged a refund on the wholesale price... this is explained exceptionally clearly on the link i posted above... i don't know how to make it any clearer this link https://www.ingramspark.com/blog/making-your-book-returnable and on that note i'm putting this thread to bed... it's just going round and round in circles on the same question
