in my story the character gets kidnapped and the kidnapprs are trying to kill him by giving a fatal injection but the child manages to switch the injections, from fatal liquid to anesthetic my problem is, what fatal injection can be mistaken for anesthetic?

A lethal injection of morphine or intravenous barbiturates could be diluted by withdrawing most of the drug and replacing it with water. The victim might lose consciousness but continue breathing. Thi child might find a discarded nearly empy vial and fill it with water.
