Note: All characters with 'Gawaeren' as the last name are elves, and they are not all necessarily related to one another. Fiona has no last name because she's not a civilized human (or human, for that matter), and her name is given to her by Peter.

    Amdiron Gawaeren
    Azalea Myamo
    Bronwyn Haegen
    Princess Cyllessil Gawaeren
    Dane Jacobson
    Eden Moriah (Protagonist)
    Fiona
    Glawel Gawaeren
    Haishen Myamo
    Iphael Gawaeren
    Iseult Teagal
    Prince Enda Ovander
    Kairener Donnel
    Laurentinus Bartholomew Normandy II
    Melkwyn Aiida Walmsley
    Mordecai Seraide
    Nemer Nirlem
    Peter Lewis (Protagonist)
    Rosalyn Black
    Sameese Gawaeren
    Lord Sanai Gawaeren
    Seamus Haegen

This isn't even all of my characters but the series takes place in two different countries and a lot of traveling happens so yeah there are a lot.

Call me cynical, but: I'd like to contribute, but I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. Hopefully someone can explain it for me.

It's just a bit of fun. There isn't really a 'point', but you can get some insight to see if your character names are either too generic, or too complicated.

Fair enough. I'm guessing mine are rather generic.

Those who wish to read the thread can get inspired by names and name generator tools etc. It can also help us assess how many named and unnamed characters we have and if it's too many or too few, and if the names are too similar, long, short, complicated etc. But yeah, it's largely, if not mostly, for fun, and there's some strangely awesome bragging-like feeling you get after posting a list of names you like of characters you like, and reveling in your own brilliance at having been clever enough to come up with them. It's an outlet, I guess, like a lot of this forum. Writing is normally a very independed and secluded art, and so some input and having an outlet for frustration and your own (imagined) genius can be a great way to not go completely insane.

You may want to tone down some of those names. Complex, hard to read/pronounce names can be very distracting, especially if they are major characters.

The popularity of Carter as a surname is remarkable. The meaning is easily discernable as something like "one who carries the load", perfect for a beleaguered protagonist.

    Major
The God String: Rand Carter, Elsie Clay
The Cut and the Cards: Zorzi Guiseppe Morsicato Pallavincini (Zorzi)
The Shielding of Mortimer Townes: Maksey, Mim, Chalo

    Minor
The God String: Spang (dog), Carl Capaldi, Dave Talbot
The Shielding of Mortimer Townes: Sitasti, Ilgut, Drom Slymbal, Mortimer Townes, Pal Tember, Halkus Moore, Pom Debry, Sgt Bemis, Agent Chugtang
The Cut and the Cards: The Master, The Monks, Mother

CharA, CharB, CharC :p until the end of the book they have names. I don't stop my writing because I haven't found the name of the char, or place :)

But sometimes I have the names in the beginning: Rus, Thora, Azza, Ainé, Mondriam, Sernance, Rhendra... (sci-fi/fantasy novel). And in this case I don't put surnames. First, because in the Middle Ages most of people don't had surnames, only indication of what they do (Joe the Shoemaker) or the region he control (John of Beerburg), and I'm working with "aliens", their system of naming persons can be different.

Two minor characters in my screenplay. Both Iranians.

    • Parvaneh - Means "Butterfly." Sixteen year old musically gifted Iranian girl. She is a "skype" friend of Dante's. Together, they do private recitals, him on his guitar, she on her keyboard. It's not a romantic interest between them, strictly a cultural exchange and love of music. In the story, she represents Dante's embracing of different cultures and people.
    • Jahangir - Means "conqueror of the world." 30 something Iranian spy/agent in the US. He's a master liar and all of his contacts believe he's strong in the Islamic faith, but he's just a nationalist. He's tasked with the capture and transport of Dante to Iran. In the story, he represents thoughtless obedience and deception in spite of knowing the danger of the outcome.

What I'm wondering now is, where did the "Dymnsi" come from? His or her parents run out of "E" names? Is there a backstory there? :)

One thing about that name, though: if any of your readers, like me, have studied Russian, that name might strike them as a little awkward. Forgive me, but I read it first as "Dumski." Ouch.

    "Isolde Lewin" is very nice.

Dymnsi is their mother. There is a backstory to all the E names, but you'll just have to find out what it is when I publish the book. :) I'm not too worried about those who have studied Russian. I can't begin to research every single name I use and make sure it doesn't have some strange meaning or pronunciation in another language or culture. I wouldn't even know where to begin with that, so I'm not going to waste my time.

I am particularly fond of the name Elizabeth Athena, so I have various stories with that name. I also like Cadmus and Atticus for boys, and Andromeda is a nice name for a friend, or an enemy who is acting the role of an ally. Here are some other nice names:

Dylis (Masculine, means 'genuine' in Welsh)
    Augusta (Feminine)
Septima (Feminine, nice name for a fairy if you favor fantasy)
    Septimus (Masculine version of Septima)
    Antioch (Masculine)
Everard (Masculine, means 'brave' or 'hardy')
Ignatius (Masculine, means 'fiery' and 'fierce')
    Arabella (Feminine, means 'invokable')
    Cadence (Feminine, means 'rhythm, flow')

@Inkwell1 Septima sounds a bit too much like septicaemia, a life threatening blood infection.
Also Everard, meaning brave or hardy. Seriously? Ever 'ard, like how an East End Cockney gangster would say ever hard. Is this intentional word play?

I came across the name Nephale (pronounced Nefalee) the other day and am hoping to use it in a later book as I think it sounds lovely.

I also have characters called Pénélope and Vincent in the same story :D

Granted, the former is mentioned probably once as her nick name is Penny, and Vincent's an alias, not the character's real name.
