    Looking for a community

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by thatguyzac, Aug 8, 2012.

I've been writing for, well, pretty much forever (though not professionally...yet), but I've never really had a group of writers to bounce ideas off of or to get feedback from. Now I'm steadily nearing the completion of my first novel (the 1st draft anyway) and figured it was a good time to try to develop a peer group. So, here I am....Hi. My name is Zac. Nice to meet you...I hope. :D

    Welcome, Zac!
There's nothing like having a group of fellow writers to "talk" to. I have found it invaluable.

Congrats on almost finishing your first draft. What kind of story is it?

    Liz

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Zac!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Its fantasy set in modern times. It’s called ‘Manifest Tales’ (for now). At its core it’s your basic ‘evil rising, good gathers to fight it’ type story, but it’s split into 3 distinct stories (or tales) that culminate to one conclusion.

In my world there is a small percentage of the population who are descendants of an ancient race from another dimension (though most don’t know that part) that are able to manipulate reality, manifesting their will. As an ancient evil that’s locked away in the other world starts to break itself free, we follow 3 different perspectives (or 4 depending on how you look at it…or more because I jump from perspectives within each part as well) as the world of both adepts and norms spirals out of control.

I originally envisioned the whole thing as a comic book (when I was like 12), and later as a short story series (which I wrote about 11 parts for before scrapping it because the overall story kind of got away from me. It’s posted online though if anyone’s interested in reading it. The book’s story line is largely different, though many characters are the present.) That’s the foundation for the idea of totally separated stories (that overlap in subtle ways) that come together in the climax. Also, I’m a big fan of William Gibson and I always loved the way he utilized this strategy, though I’m going for something a little different.

I’m about 2/3 through part 3. Then it’s just the last part, which should be shorter than the others…should be, we’ll see. Then the real work begins…revisions and edits. I already have revisions I know I need to do to part one and a few for part 2. Should be interesting. I’ll post some excerpts in the next few days in the novel forum for anyone interested.

Thanks for the welcome! I look forward to diving in further and reading some of the works posted!

Whoops, or not. Reading the rules, I see I need to participate a bit before I can post excerpts, so once I meet those requirements I will!
