Personally, I dig the @ mention functionality. It is helpful in letting someone know that you are responding to their post directly, especially in threads that swell at a pace faster than some people care to keep up with (because it sends the user a notification). I am just wondering how the @ mention functionality works with usernames that have spaces in them? So, here is a test: @Anthony Martin Will it pick up the space?
@Anthony Martin - thanks for the test. I am kind of neutral on the mention functionality, although it is sometimes nice to see that someone either approved or disagreed with what you said. I have a habit of shortening long names, so I am wondering how important is it to people? For example, I would probably just cite you as Anthony, not typing out your full name because I am lazy. (Plus having to take the time to type the @ symbol.) So, how important is it to people? If I'm really majorly disagreeing or super-love the comment, I'll take the time, although if I super love it, I might just give some rep instead (unless I can't because I gave some to the person recently).
@chicagoliz It's important to me mostly because of the dopamine spike I get when I open up the forums and see some notifications I mostly started this thread to a) test out the aforementioned question, b) make more people aware of the functionality if they want to use it and c) mention some of the benefits that I see in using it. Of course, it's all up to personal preference in the end.
I find it annoying. Useless notifications when I log on, just because someone has name-dropped me. But in this era of hashtags and the Twitterverse, I suppose I should get over it. So I will endure the extra notifies with a sigh, but I don't plan to add to them.
In an upcoming version of the site, everyone will have the option to disable notifications for mentions (which, imo, is kind of a must for features like this). Good to see it works for users with spaced usernames.
Also, make sure the username is truly complete. I have a period at the end of mine, Ian J., so if that's missed out it doesn't work for me as the forum software will try and notify a user called 'Ian J', not 'Ian J.' @Ian J.
@Daniel -- I guess I didn't realize that the user can't manage these notifications yet. I agree that this is a must.
i'm glad to know i can disable it, as i'm with cog on it being more of an annoyance than anything helpful...
I almost wish I could say it's an annoyance, but hardly anyone ever namedrops me! I usually go many days without any notifications at all. It's kind of nice to see something in my inbox.
