Hi there! I dont know nearly enough writers, so I came here to meet others who share the same passion for the written word as I do. I'm a writer, student, journalist, and a bit of a dork. I enjoy running and yoga. I'm a fan of the Japanese anime and manga world --as someone with a slight background in art history, I believe both are extensions of the beautiful, traditional Japanese art. I talk religion and politics, even though I should probably keep my opinions to myself most of the time. Most of my writings are metafiction, and I like it that way. Quick to befriend but a bit slower to trust. Come see me sometime!
Hello Mercurial, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Thank you both for the warm welcomes! I've been popping in and out throughout the day (it's been one of those nice, lazy ones), and everything I'm seeing I'm really excited about. If I'm understanding the rules correctly, I really like the way the Review Room is set up. And I'm finding that some users here are characters themselves! I've checked out the links you've provided; thank you, Cogito! I hope to become an active member of the Short Story contest soon. --Unfortunately, I'm not much of a poet.
Welcome to WF, Mercurial! I am not so much of a poet myself, but I really enjoy reading other peoples poems! Glad you found us! Have fun! Learn Lots! Make Friends! (Can't wait to read your short stories)
Thanks, Jack! --Like your avatar; I was a big fan of LOST (though I veto most televison programs) into it's fourth season before I got a little fed up with the growing questions and diminishing answers. I figure once the show wraps up once and for all I'll rent the episodes from the video store and watch them all; those questions still lurk in my mind! I love poetry and it's really very sad that I cant seem to make my words sing, so I check out other people's poetry all the time, too. I think that the best poetry (and writing too, as a matter of fact) goes unpublished, so I'm constantly trying to find those talented; it's an amazing thing to be a part of something that very few people are a part of.
