Blade Runner The Original Dawn of the Dead Aliens The Ox Bow Incident The Good The Bad and The Ugly Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure Unforgiven Paprika Evil Dead To name a few of my favorites.
Going by the last couple of picks, I'll add two movies to my previous suggestions... The Secret of Roan Inish and Whale Rider.
Especially after the trailer, I’d say it was misleading but that would be a massive understatement. They made the film look a third rate narnia rip-off.
The 2 young actors in Bridge to Terabithia were perfect. Another awesome movie: The Illusionist with Edward Norton
I've been trying to watch The Illusionist for so long, but my stupid DVD gets stuck about twenty-seven minutes into the movie. Anyway, if you liked The Illusionist, you might want to check out The Prestige (starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson, and directed by Christopher Nolan - the guy who brought us The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Memento and THE PRESTIGE!!!). It's another deftly woven tale about magic. By the way, I haven't seen it yet. Just giving you a suggestion that I found numerous times when I went through a particular part of a site numerous times.
Haven't seen The Prestige, but I've heard it's a lot darker than The Illusionist and not as good. Also, I'm pretty anti-Christian...Bale, that is.
If you are serious about improving your 'movie knowledge', you need to check out lists of classics and watch milestone films in various genres. The reason I say this is that so many films these days reference/rip off the greats. There are plenty of lists on Google you can check and classic films to download/find in libraries.
Yeah. Loved it. I'm a big fan of David Fincher. (I've been trying to get my hands on Panic Room for so long, by the way. Anyone know how good it is?) madhoca - I'm not really into classics .
I think you misunderstand me when I say classics e.g. 'Star Wars' is a classic, and so is 'It's a Wonderful Life'. They're not much like each other, are they? Pick a genre you like and look at the best that have been done in that field--old or new.
I don't know what your preferrence but mine has been a combination of action and something else not sure what though. 1) The Pianist 2) Schindlers List 3) Das Boot 4) Life is Beautiful 5) Goodfellas 6) Taxi Driver 7) Captains Courageous 8) Star Wars 9) Finding Nemo 10) Forrest Gump 11) Saving Private Ryan 12) The Transporter-that's my Audi he's driving..yea...lol.
Sorry for the rant.... I’d have to disagree with you there; words cannot describe how much I dislike that film. But what’s gets me is that if you don’t like ‘Life is Beautiful’ people think you are some kind of uncultured philistine. It’s untouchable simply because it’s in a foreign language, it’s about the holocaust and is therefore smart and mature as opposed to some third rate comedy/ drama that fails on every level. Otherwise nice list.
I don't usually have the attention span for movies. I don't like 99 percent of them. I usually watch documentaries and good comedies. But I do like: Orca: The Killer Whale Zardoz Hedwig and the Angry Inch Velvet Goldmine Gus Van Sant movies John Waters movies
Has anyone seen Drop Dead Fred? i consider it my absolute favorite movie; I used to watch it religiously as a kid and even to this day I am just in love with it, and can relate to it.
Yeah, it has a special spark. Not sure if i mentioned this last time of if it has actually been mentioned but Donnie Darko - hello cult status Also speaking of Old movies you saw as a kid. How about The dark crystal, man that was good! And for a threesome of "dark" , i just watched Dark City again. A much, MUCH better movie then the matrix if you ask me.
I remember that movie being terrible, though it had bad movie appeal. The acting was just as bad and they lacked the cool special effects to make up for it. It had a cool looking set but it seemed kinda hokey. Though your recommendation I'll probably check it out again. Disagreed heartily. Classics simply add to a traditional educational of movies. A person can watch nothing but ****ty B movies and still gain an understanding of what makes a good movie. The things that work in the classics are the same things that work in the New Jack City's and Escape From New York's.
I saw Blindness last night. Wow. Rather political, and has something of an Amnesty International flavor about it, but it was genuinely thought provoking.
Monster vs. Alien was hilarious. Just seen it in the theater with my daughter. I laughed the whole way through.
The Prestige is far superior to The Illusionist, which I still think is a fabulous film. The Prestige is just untouchable. Also, to the guy who was asking about Panic Room: It's not very good, but it's okay if you need something to watch on a long afternoon, like I did when I saw it. It's the worst Fincher film I've seen. I bought The Fifth Element today. Anyone love this as much as I do?
I might see that, I have a friend who loves this type of film. He'll probably drag me along. Kung Fu Panda was fantastic, one of the best films of the year in fact, it really restored my faith in DreamWorks, lets hope this doesn't disappoint.
