Whenever that movie came out (fifteen years ago?), my cable company was experimenting with a sort of "saturation bombing" style of advertising. There would be a commercial for it in literally (adverb: literally in a literal manner or sense; exactly. (archaic)) every commercial break. With extended trailers and interviews with the actors and directors run as infomercials during extended breaks between shows and movies. On every station that the cable company provided. In the month or so that this promotion ran (before it was replaced by a similar one for, I believe, Phone Booth, starring Colin Ferrell) I lost all interest in seeing the movie and developed a passionate hatred for rotoscoping. Fortunately, they only gave that treatment to six or so films, we've since returned to a regular schedule of dodgy diet pills and medically unsound exercise machines
Advertising/marketing department at Fox is to blame, they're the ones who decided to try and fill a dog dish with a firehose. It may be an unconscious prejudice, but advertising here seems to be particularly unsubtle.
Soo, the Matrix is a positive thing? Actually, that was the biggest weakness of The Matrix series. Who would prefer an underground world without the sun, eating soylent gloop, to the modern world, despite its problems?
I'm not at all familiar with the source material (the book is constantly on my 'recommended' list at amazon, but the synopsis suggests it's aimed more at the YA market so I've not bothered. Just the trailer ... when all that whizz-wang-bang shite begins reminded me so much of Bay's Transformer films. The trailer alone made me feel nauseous and I just know 120 minutes of that stuff would give me a migraine.
Surrogates. It's all a bit shit, really - some terrible dialogue - but Bruce Willis has certainly done his fair share of sc-fi.
Trying to watch Johnny Mnemonic - oh it's bad. Made in 1995 but somehow manages to look like a badly made MTV video from a decade earlier.
Tonight's film was Platoon in Space ... sorry, I mean Aliens. Doesn't compare with the original on any level. All that gung-ho Marines banter really gets on my tits! On the plus side, it is fun watching the arse holes getting picked off.
I just saw Blade Runner 2049 yesterday. The cinematography was simply stunning. Very very well done, I was in awe of the cinematography and visuals the whole time. Without spoiling anything, I thought the story was pretty well done as well and the acting was solid. The world-building was absolutely fantastic and I dreaded the thought of living in such a world. Seemed really awful. I just hope there will not be another sequel. This seems like a fine ending for this storyline.
It hasn't made it to the theater in my home town and I doubt it actually will. I get to chose between Annabelle and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Joy.
I don't do cinemas any more, so will have to wait until it hits the dvd shelves. Thankfully that's not very long after its theatre run these days, so not too long a wait hopefully. Half of me wishes Scott had taken up the director's chair again, but after his Alien turkey I'm not so sure. Did Vangelis do the score again? That would have been nice. Having said that I'm not sure he's still alive, is he?
I'm a fan of Villeneuve. He's a good director. I also like what he did with Arrival. Score was done by Hans Zimmer this time. It was good, but at times I felt it could have been a bit more subtle. I would highly recommend you see it in the cinema though. The impact of the cinematography will not be the same on a small screen.
Mrs. A and I just watched your name last night. Starts out as a cutesy little body swap story, and then goes... Well, I don't generally get into anime, but this wasn't entirely horrible. JJ Abrams is talking about adapting it, however, which is slightly worrisome.
Here a few screengrabs from the BladeRunner Trailer that I found absolutely stunning on the big screen:
I just read the screenplay for Deadpool. I haven't seen the movie, nor was I familiar with the character before that abysmal attempt at a Wolverine origin story. I liked the character and thought the storyline started well, but it fell apart after the first act with too many flashbacks. I probably would have liked it better if it had been more of a sequential story. I also found the character of NTW annoying, even for as small a part as she had. It wasn't a bad story, but it definitely misfired a few times.
Alien Resurrection - not a terrible addition to the series. It looks good on the whole, but some of the dialogue is just plain awful.
You should see the movie. You might like it more. There's definitely a certain aspect of the cinematography and acting that adds to it that you need to really get the experience. Where and why does one read the script of a movie by itself before seeing it anyway?
