Watched Train to Busan last night. God damn is it good! It nailed every aspect, but the cinematography stands out: absolutely gorgeous and flawlessly timed from beginning to end.
I found a film while browsing Prime’s freebies earlier, that I haven’t seen for years. A real psychological spine-tingler called Images (Susannah York has never looked so beautiful) concerning visions, doppelgängers and a slow decent into madness. By the end of the film you don’t know who’s who and what’s what. Very atmospheric and beautifully shot. An obscure little gem of a film.
It's just a fun movie. I know it has its problems, but I like it anyways. Watching Alan Rickman overact is comedy in its own right.
Oh, when you get old and cynical like me, the ‘problems’ of Hollywood blockbusters scream out. The sickly friendship McClane forms with Al, the street cop, gets me when I watch the film these days.
Why? Who else is he supposed to talk to during the movie? That's a plot mechanic, bruh. There's no interior monologue in film.
No, it’s not the fact he communicates with Al. That’s fine and necessary. It’s all the man love between them I’m talking about. There’s one line in particular that’s so corny it makes me cringe every time. It’s when Al says to McClane “Hey, I love you, and so do a lot of the other guys here.”
Lethal Weapon 3 later tonight. In my opinion the series was on its way down by this point. Joe Pesci’s Leo was annoying enough in 2, and now we have him in an even bigger dose.
Picked up Die Hard 2 and Lethal Weapon 4 today, so that’s tonight’s TV sorted. Need to give DH2 another go, I’ve only seen it once and that was many many years ago. Maybe I’ll appreciate it a little more this time round.
Well I gave it another go and it’s still a lousy film! Terrible direction, too many characters, and a weird, uncomfortable sense of claustrophobia. I suppose it makes sense it’s the weakest of the three (I don’t count the cash-ins that followed later). One and three were directed by John McTiernan, the second by a Renny Harlin (?)
Renny Harlin did Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and a really weird messed up Exorcist sequel that I liked certain things about but overall was not a good movie. In fact I'd say the same about Nightmare 4. He's a mixed bag of nuts. When he was trying to get the gig directing Nightmare 4 he apparently was homeless and kept showing up in the same clothes, dirtier every time, and a producer felt so bad for him she hired him.
But honestly, I think most of the problems with Die Hard 2 were writing problems. A director cant' fix those, short of getting a re-write on the script.
