TBH, I think the books are a lot better. I watched the movies after reading the series so was able to appreciate the literary angle in the movies. And also, you don’t get to place a face to a name when you’re reading the books. So the movies were helpful that way. But I think they’re all highly imaginative!
they definitely are, yeah. I liked The Horse and His Boy the most I think. They never made a movie out of it, but that is a great fantasy story.
New Dune movie was legit. You've got to watch it with those wiggly theater seats so you get the full thopter experience. I thought the actor for Paul was spot on. Supporting cast were also well chosen. Next up for cinematic experience is the new Rifftrax movie. "Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes." I'm watching it in the theater on Tuesday. The original Amityville book really scared me back in the day. I read it when I was nine. I distinctly remember sitting in the screened in porch of this rental house we were in up in Montana and reading it and being pretty scared. I was convinced our house had hidden rooms with murder wells to hell. I just hadn't found them yet. I was new to the area and didn't have many friends because I "talked funny" (Texas drawl), so I read a lot of books. I gave up the children's section at an early age. Anyway, I don't intend to be too frightened by this cash-in, and I'm happy to see it riffed.
I don’t do cinemas so I’m going to have to wait, but does it feel as ‘cult’ as the original. I’m always put off by cult films getting the big Hollywood makeover.
I saw a review of it on YouTube and it sounds like it's really good. I don't know much about Dune, and haven't seen any of the movies or anything, but apparently many people feel like no movie version has been the definitive one yet, and the reviewer said he thinks this one might well be that definitive version.
probably, at least as close as we're ever likely to get. But the jury is still out until part 2; there's still lots of room to screw it up, haha. I would rate the film as a very solid 7.5-8.5/10. No film can encapsulate that book perfectly, but this movie did a pretty good job. As for the cult feel, I don't really know. Probably not, but I wasn't really thinking about that. I think it did capture a mood that is very compatible with the book. It was well cast. The film is absolutely gorgeous. It's huge, the sets are all huge, and there were so many great shots of the desert. Materially, in terms of the film's vision of what Dune would look like as a movie, it was absolutely spot on. That was the coolest part. I think this is one of those movies you should try to see in the theater if possible, just because of how it was shot. It would benefit from it. Most films would, but this one more than most.
This one looks so close to the source material! I’m so disappointed with the movie franchise as a whole. The first movie was the only one I somewhat enjoyed.
Dune was pretty close to the source material. (I've read the first three books.) They obviously made some adjustments for cinematic pacing and such. I don't know how that could be avoided. I was impressed with the scale of the world. It felt epic. There was one special effect I thought was suspicious. The rest of the visuals were spot on. I've seen the Lynch version, of course, and it has its charm. I don't mind it, but this version was many, many times more accurate. It would be very difficult to top it on that front. Maybe you'd need a miniseries like the Sci-fi channel did back in the day. I miss those times . . . When I came home, I tried to use the "Voice" on everyone in the house: kid, cat, spouse. Clean your room! Quit meowing! Make me steak tacos! It's important to keep the targets in proper order.
The one where the giant ship comes up out of the water. The scale seemed off because of the way the water moved. The ship was supposed to be like a kilometer long, but the movement didn't look right. Like in those old movies: "Das Toyboat." hahaha! I always missed that one. I mentioned I'm seeing Rifftrax on Tuesday? Can't wait!
Oh, I completely agree with you except I didn't like the first one buuuut it's definitely better than the others!
If by "the original" you mean David Lynch's 1984 film, that was a big Hollywood film if there ever was one. It can only be called cult in that it was a box office flop and critically panned, but deeply loved by a handful of weirdos (like me). I haven't seen the Villaneuve film yet, but it would be odd to think of it as a remake since it's based on a book. And as much as I love the Lynch film, it's got a lot of flaws and it is far from the last word on cinematic treatments of the novel.
I caught the new Dune. It was pretty good, even if the acting was a bit wooden, the visuals were nice. I think they should do a side movie on the Sardaukar, they have an insane Lore (even if there isn't much to work with from the books),
I think the Sardaukar are more or less inspired by the Janissary corps. That would make for some interesting films or series (I bet Turkey has already produced a few).
Well, as chance would have it I called into a charity shop today and they had the Narnia box set for £3. I tried to watch the second one earlier this afternoon, but I’m afraid I gave up about 40 minutes in. They feel cheaply made - almost like a TV movie - and the dialogue is awful.
