I love nano. I use it to push myself to finish novels in my series or to finish ones I have been putting off for a while. This year it will be book 4 in my series or my ya Sci fi. Haven't decided yet.
Oh, I'm sure I don't, unless things change at work. (Six day work week is not conducive to writing). But, I'm sure as heck gonna take a stab at it.
I did it a couple years ago and it's great to teach you that you can make writing a daily habit. But other than that I don't find it that useful - unless you've got a lot of friends on the site to help you stay accountable. I do love looking at the cover contests, though.
I've been looking for some good, *free* stock photos to make a cover. I could draw one, but I'd rather go for that "professional" look.
I have my reservations about the efficacy of this, but at this point, I think I'll give it a shot. However, Novemeber is essentially my last month of the semester, so I'll probably be extending "NaNoWriMo" into mid-January. I'll have lots of time to devote to writing over the break. And I'm actually getting excited about it again because I have some new ideas.
This year I'm finally doing it again! I'm currently working on a project that I'm only three chapters into. This makes it a perfect year for Nano. This also makes 2015 my first Nanowrimo since 2012
150k for me is my target. Will be adding it to my progress journal to keep me on track and hold me accountable.
I am a little tempted. I might use it as motivation to knock out 20-30k, and from their I'll have my feet in the proverbial bird bath. Is that a saying?
You need photos that have been released into the public domain. If you use photos that (e.g.) are released under one of the Creative Commons licences, you might find it restrictive. E.g. you might have to release your book under the same Creative Commons licence. It is possible to buy paid-for pictures for less than you might expect, if you can find one that's suitable.
Man, I have a hard enough time hitting 500 a day. I'll probably just use the overall idea motivate me to hit my benchmarks, but 50k in a month is not for me. I'm not worried about the quality. My first drafts are awful whether it's 500 a day or 5000. It will always require serious revising. Plus, Fallout 4.
@DefinitelyMaybe : mostly, I've been digging through DeviantArt's stock photos. 95% of those are posted for people to use for free, asking only a credit. It can be tricky, though, finding pics that work for what you're looking to create. @Jones : The point, really, is to just get the words on paper, even if it's not very good. Get it out there, and you can edit later, hacking out the bits you don't like.
Uh @ManOrAstroMan - When you are selling something which contains the work of another the licensing system is a major concern even in CC-by-SA. Even if you stick to Wikimedia Commons and such, it does not necessarily mean it is acceptable if they have been license-washed. Always obtain written permission from the creator, directly. A long time back, I had someone who did wonderful works I wanted to use for a paper I was doing. It got heated and ended up providing the links to the original postings before their little DeviantArt "publication". Sorry if it is a bit off-topic - but always make sure to cover your legal matters with a professional if you end up publishing anything.
I remember back in the days my FB used to get spammed with "OMG ITS NANOWRIMO!!!" cartoons. What happened to those?
Well, right. But, as I said, most of the stuff is free to use, with only a credit requested in return. Therefore, the rest of the content is not free to use, and those interested must pay, or follow whatever other rules the content creator has outlined. There's also separate galleries for stock photos and for photographic art. Images posted in the Photography gallery, it can be assumed, are not available for use at all. Stock photos, however, are posted under the Resources heading, and can be used as long as the creator's conditions are met. Sorry for the OT.
I'm in the same boat, but decided to join. I've never done it before, and am not a big fan of the concept, actually. BUT I've had such a rotten year for writing that I'm willing to get down off my high horse and WriMo. I'm trying for a big push, either 50k or finishing one of my character's arcs, whichever comes first. Let's do it, @Moth, there's no shame in using their rules to get writing, even if we break 'em.
I changed my mind. I finally have a solid idea for a second novel, and I've spent today planning it, so I may as well spend November writing it. My username on there is AnnaMK if anyone wants to be writing buddies (whatever that means)?
Huh. Yeah, it does. Maybe it's just their search engine which is broken. I accidentally added some random woman in Minnesota.
http://nanowrimo.org/participants/captain-proton Got me some wiggle room at 5k+ words, which is good, because I'm stuck. Maybe some sleep will help.
