With the American 4th of July tomorrow, I figured I’d ask about the national holidays from around the world. Tell me about them, what do y’all do?
Holidays in the UK aren't specific dates. In the UK a holiday is when you go away somewhere for a period of time. They're what you call vacations. You go to places like Hawaii. We go to Scunthorpe.
Well, we do have holi-days in truth, but I don't know what or when they are. Most of them are a load of bollocks anyway.
@OurJud is hilarious. We do have public holidays - Christmas Day, Good Friday...all the regular holidays. Burns Night is celebrated in Scotland. I may have a fuzzy head/and be wrong, but I don't think it is a public holiday, as such. The next big one is the August Bank Holiday - and then we descend into winter, with only a minor blip for Bonfire Night, or Halloween as Jud might call it, heh heh, heh... - no, that's one great & perennial bug-bear of cultural nostalgists: Once, we had 'Penny for the Guy,' chestnuts, fireworks and we burned a Catholic at the stake. And now, little girls rush door to door in their fairy dresses drinking coca-cola, my God where is my medication, nurse...etc...
Canada has the standard holidays each year (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.) but the one most analogous to Independence Day would be Canada Day, July 1. It's just a summer day off, mostly - generally big festivities at Parliament Hill and in some other cities, and fireworks all over the place. The only other one that's similar is Victoria Day, which is whichever Monday is closest to May 24. It's less patriotic, more focused on just getting outside. A lot of people go camping, since it's considered the start of the summer season (even though it can still be quite chilly some years). But I don't think every province celebrates it.
Imagine then I am playing with my hamster. If I had my mill, milf, & my million pounds I'd send you to Hawaii, brother comrade. Take you in my convertible roller, my hair bouffant in wind, my teeth sparkling like icebergs. I'd drop you with your suitcases. And when you arrive - flowers are slung around your neck, and your beautiful tour guides Mandy and Natasha swim either side of you at the beach. You, my prince, mount the House of Hawaii, the regal dolphin, and ride atop/under the watery sunset together, the girls have flippers, the coconut cocktail is held in your one hand, and the dolphin cock is gripped in the other to show him who's boss/and for steering past the corals. WIP
That would be nice. I suppose I should say at this juncture that I've never been to Scunthorpe and that it may well be a lovely place.
I live in the UK now, but I'm French and our Independence Day (Bastille Day) is 14 July, as everyone knows. This is what it looks like in Paris. (I'm not posting these to brag, but because I'm really homesick.) I guess we pretty much do what other nations do on such days. We meet with family or friends to celebrate, we drink just a little (we are French) and we go watch the fireworks.
