need feedback on dell mini-netbook 1012

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by mammamaia, Sep 11, 2010.

anyone have one, or have any info on what they're good/not good for?

will the 'windows 7 starter edition' that comes with it work well enough for normal writing needs?

any feedback will be greatly appreciated... love and hugs, maia

Depends on the specs. A Dell should be just fine for you for writing. Depending on the processor and how much RAM it has, Windows 7 may run well or be somewhat slow. I haven't had any trouble with Win 7, to be honest, but I prefer my sleek linux installation.

well, since i write full time and do a lot of research and stuff on a regular basis, i have the full windows 7 in my dell inspiron e1505 full-size laptop, so i can't tell if the 'starter' version in a mini-netbook will be good enough for 'normal' non-professional use...

do you have any knowledge of that and the mini-netbook specifically, sp?

thanks for the swift response, btw!

    hugs, m

I just looked at the specs on a couple Dell mini netbooks. The ones I saw had 1 GIG RAM. It's not going to be super fast or anything, but if what you're planning on doing is writing and going online, I think it will serve your needs just fine. If you can find one with 2 GIGs of RAM, even better.

That version of Win 7 should be fine for what you want to do.

    thanks!

btw, it's not for me... just for some folks who had ordinary computer needs and for a 5-yr-old's first one that his mom can also use...

    Ah. Should be fine.

If they want games for the kids, a netbook isn't going to give them the most capability, but I imagine it will run the basic stuff for a 5 year old.

You should be able to use an external CD drive. I assume these all have USB ports.

My mom's netbook has 3 usb ports. I've seen some that have 2 but most seem to have 3.

Well that took longer than it should have, but I found on the site that a dell mini has 3 2.0 USB ports.

No, but I did a quick search, and it seems that Dell netbooks have either 2 or 3 usb ports depending on the model.

Edit: annuniel is correct. The 1012 has 3 ports.

    No problem Maia! :)

It was surprisingly hidden. Usually they like to clearly advertise how many ports it has, but I guess not many want USB ports on their minis? I dunno, I had to buy USB hubs for my laptop and it has 4 USB ports!

A good way to find those details are Youtube reviews of said products (took all fur 15 seconds).

Looks okay. I had a netbook a year ago, but it was an early aser model and was...poor.

But these look much more friendly.

Looks like can easily upgrade the RAM on these as well, which would help with Win7
