I'm new here. I have a short story I plan to self-publish, so I can't post it. Although, I need someone with an open mind to review it. I won't give away the plot, but I will say it has a sprinkling of these elements (the order is arbitrary): sci-fi, horror, romance, action, legal, and some comedy. It is important that you have an open mind. I'd prefer an athiest. But, even though you have an open mind, I would very much like for you not to hold back on any criticism. Rightwing nutcases and religious types, save yourself sometime, don't bother. You will only be offended. Please contact me by email. If you would like to be included in the acknowledgements, I could do that, if not, then I can leave you out. I really need the help, I'm about ready to begin binding so I can begin to sell copies. The story is about 12,800 words. Even if you request a electronic copy to review, I don't necessarily expect to get back a review. For whatever reason, I will understand. Request a copy by sending me an email: <suppressed email address>
If you plan to self-publish, then you won't be risking first publication status. Also, if you are about to bind it for distribution, isn't it a bit late for reviewing? It's not really appropriate to ask people to email you for a copy, especially as a new member whom no one knows. For all we know, you could be collecting email addresses for a mailing list. But if you are sincerely seeking feedback, an acceptable alternative is to post unrelated samples of your writing style for review instead. Under the circumstances, I must remove your email address from the above post. If you are on the level, you will understand the need for that precaution.
I'm not doing large scale stuff. I'm not collecting emails for a email list. I have a legit reason for not publishing it here and I gave it. Anyone who is serious about being published would understand that. An emailed copy is less likely to end up all over the web vs. putting it up on the forum, which guarantees it's free to all and really couldn't be sold at that point. A google search would bring up this forum. If that is not a legit reason, there isn't one. I don't have anything that I don't want to publish. That goes in the trash.
Well in that case perhaps you'd review some other members fiction here as you wish to recieve critique then the least you can do is offer some critique in return. And I'd also advise you to maybe post a chapter or so up in the writing section of the forum. ~Raven. Senior Super Moderator.
Or if you're really in need of such a review, you can private message a reviewer and ask them for help that way.
Hello sixthempiricist, Welcome to the Writing Forums. We've kind of started off on the wrong foot, although it is still generally a good idea to get to know your way around a new forum first so you know how they do things. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well! As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
I'm agnostic, but to be honest, the way you're going about having this reviewed is a little odd. I would suggest maybe getting it reviewed in a writers group if you're so worried about people stealing your ideas.
over 12k words is way beyond the most common 'short story' size, comes closer to a 'novella' or 'novelette' i should think... and i don't know who you'd expect to buy it, if it's for the adult market, unless you sell it for way below normal paperback price, as it's so short... where do you intend to sell it, if you don't mind saying?... i'll be happy to take a look at it, if you want a neutral critique... you can email me at address below... but it's not clear why you'd want anyone to take a look at it now, if you're going to go ahead and print it as is... btw, i don't believe in any god/s or religion and write on the subjects rather irreverently myself, from time to time... welcome to the forums! love and hugs, maia maia3maia@hotmail.com
hello and welcome to the forum I hope that you have a most wonderful time here with all of us and don't worry, you will at some point come face to face with the forum crazies, but they don't bite at all, so you are pretty safe I guess. If they do bite....hmmm.... have fun and see you around the boards anyways.... torana
