Hi I just found about this place and am delighted that there is so many people out there who either are experienced with writing or are new like myself. My query is: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO CREATE CHARACTERS and also be given an idea on how to start a novel..... Anyone out there willing to give me a view pointers on these two issues would be a great help........... what do people thin of this quote: IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DO NOTHING & NOTHING TO DO A LONG TIME
my apologies zorell, I didn't realise that i posted more that the one i meant to. All the same I would grateful if you have any suggestions to my queries
If you're planning on writing a novel, plan it all out in reasonable detail beforehand. Otherwise you'll just get lost, bored, and stop writing. This might also help you work out what you need from your characters, so you can create characters to fill certain roles. Or you could do it the other way around, create some strong characters, and then write the plot based on how they interact.
Hello Creed, Welcome to the Writing Forums. You'll probably find some answers to your questions in threads already on the site, particularly in subforums under the Writing Issues forum. There are no quick answers, because it is not an instant process, but there are plenty of ideas around to help you get started. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Welcome to the forums. We have a thread called "Character Development" for creating characters, (you may find the character sheets helpful) and you can probably find the information you need there. If not, feel free to post the specific problem you're having with characters there, and we'll do our best to help.
Oklie-kokes, I want to welcome you, and apologize for any tone you might have picked from my previous post. Welcome to the family. As to developing your characters, don't laugh at me for this, but listen to them, they may no more about your plot and their goals than you do. As to developing a novel as a whole, try parusing the many pieces already submitted, and the various posts and replies they have generated, you can learn a lot from those who have already walked your path. Happy trails, and may your keys never strike back. (Also, PM me or visit my page if you have any question.)
Welcome, as the self-proclaimed leader of the welcoming committee, I have cookies for you! Have some Oreo's with a cup of milk...you do like Oreo's right?
Now he's witholding snickerdoodles too!? The nerve! that's it, i say e all band together and rob him of the cookies, who is with me!?
You hold him down, I'll get the duct tape. After that we can harvest the white stuff out of the middle of the oreos, crumble the snickerdoodles and mix it in with a milkshake. Then we can go out and get some cookie dough ice cream, dig out the chunks of dough and see if they really do make cookies if you bake them.
I don't know if you have a vivid imagination, or if you're just plain diabolical. And just so you know, it's CREAM, the stuff in an OREO is CREAM. You made it sound weird.
