Hello, My name is joey and as you can tell I am new to this website. I was hoping that someone with some experience can help out the new guy. To make the long story short a couple of months ago I started reading alot of books. I never was much into reading when I was a teenager however it seems these days I can't stop. When ever I turn around I am reading a book. And with this new development I decided to attempt to write my own. Its fictional and needs a lot of work. I am far from finishing but even in the beginning I am seeing the lack of detail to put the reader in observer seat. I was hoping maybe someone would be willing to spend a little bit of their time and help me out. Thank you, joey
Welcome Joey. just so you know, you should be getting a message from Cogito, one of our mods, telling you not to post your work first very soon (this is #3, C.) as for your work, feel free to send it my way. I have ample time to do a thorough review. Either send it to me Via private message, or send me a link where I can find it. Enjoy the site. --BG_Hambone--
Hey Trapped! Welcome to the WF! There are a whole bunch of members here to help you! (Includeing Me) Feel free to ask about anything. Nice to meet you - Jack
Hello Joey, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Actually, making a long story short is usually good starting advice. Most new writers throw in too much stuff that does nothing for the story. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Thank you Thank you all for the great advice. I guess I will start by looking around the site and finding useful ways to start my writing. From what I've read so far I really need to come up with an outline. Right now I just been winging it from my head. If you guys have any great outlining ideas to pass on I would appreciate it. Thanks again, Joey
