Hello, my name is Shelley and I'm working on a research project for my masters' in communication. I truly hope you don't mind my dropping in like this out of the blue. I have a research project due soon involving a gendered perspective on fan fiction and I'd love to include some commentary/contributions from fan fiction writers, especially female writers. I would love to interview (either on line via emails or through IM chat) anyone here who might be involved in writing any fan fiction. If this is a possibility, please reply in this thread and let me know the type of fan fiction (it can be any genre of fan fiction) you write, your gender, and what would be your preferred way to work through the interview process. Again, I hope you don't mind my intrusion; I'd love to meet some of you and talk about what you do, why, how you expand on the story archs, etc etc. Thanks! Shelley
Welcome, Shelley. I only dabble in fan fiction, sadly. I don't think I'm the type of interviewee you're looking for. I hope you do find what you need for your class and also hope you enjoy the site ~Lynn
Hello Shelley, Welcome to the Writing Forums. We generally frouwn on people joining just to survey, poll, or recruit members, but as long as it does not become intrusive, we'll allow it. You may use your member blog to conduct your inquiries, and put a link in yous signature to invite responses. Our fanfic members are not very numerous in any case, though. There are other sites that are far more focused on fan fiction. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Thanks for the welcome. I'm getting my masters through Bellarmine. lynneandlynn, "dabbling" is just fine. That's perfect, in fact. I am a writer by trade, so it's very likely I will stay around a while, at least once this project is over! I was a professional writer with a Fortune 500 company (executive communications) for almost 20 years. While most of my writing was technical and corporate in nature, I tried my hand a time or two with creative writing. One just don't get a lot of time for that when working 70+ hour weeks! I've been involved in various online writing forums over the years, though not in the last 3 or 4, so I'd love to stick around and flex my creative muscles again! (once this project is over!)
