    New member: Old news. Greetings!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Faustine ismyrealname, Apr 22, 2009.

I am Faustine. This is not an alias, it is seriously my name. You just can't make that kind of thing up.

    Lately I've battled with words.
I've battled with communication and how can one ever truly communicate with another human being effectively, if words are only labels given to objects with some sort of understood meaning. This is a laptop, because it has been collectively understood: this object = laptop.

All rambling aside, I try to communicate. It is usually in the form of words, although I also know sign language. It's for no reason other than the fascination- purely academic. It's about as useful as my Chaucer or Shakespeare classes.
then again, I do enjoy it more than middle English.

It is nice to meet whomever has decided to read my incoherent 1am ramblings. I'll be sure to return the favor and read as well.

and I hope your night is fabulous,
    thank you.

Hi Faustine! I wouldn't worry too much about that name. I never would have thought it especially unusual. If ismyrealname on the other hand is your real last name...

Hello Faustine, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Actually, you can make these things up. Writers do that! :)

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Trust me, don't bother about the name. My IRL name is probably one of the two such in my country and the ones close to it; and probably still rare in entire Europe, save for one country, which is in no way related to me, and a specific animal that I truly hate.

    Welcome.

P.S. Today in philosophy we've talked about life seen as language. Also, we debated on this subject, sorry if I'm boring you, "How would a person communicate or even think without a known language (for example, he's death and blind when born; thus, he can't learn anything)?" Before you say anything, remember that signs are a primal form of language and also that you think through a language as well.
