Non-US resident wanting to publish in the US

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by Bluesman, May 18, 2012.

I live in the Netherlands, so I'm a Dutch citizen. I'm writing in English and my story takes place in the USA, so obviously I'm aiming at a US-market. My goal is to get something published in the US, eventually.

I can imagine this can get complicated with taxes and rights and all that. How would this work? Is there any information available on this?

You should consult a literary attorney about contract and tax issues.

For a start you'll probably have to get an ITIN from the IRS so the publisher won't withhold taxes. That's a pain in itself in most countries.

I don't see that rights would be an issue; you'd probably sell them US rights to the book.

Why would you sell them your rights?
