I would assume RTF or TXT files since there doesn't appear to be any formatting options. Since the device is advertised primarily as a first draft tool I would be surprised if the files it creates aren't easy to open in other software.
This just in on the BYOK forum: -Cloud syncing will not be a requirement, but it will be there in case you'd like to use it. You could even turn off Wi-Fi completely to save some battery. The device itself will have internal storage (16mb - over 1 million words) and would would have the ability to hook it up directly to your computer via USB-c when you want to offload files (or pull files onto the device). Curious to hear your thoughts on this. Does it effectively solve your desire for a USB stick or would you still want the ability to use a USB stick? -There is no subscription planned. -Long battery life is a priority. Working on that now. (There will be a tradeoff with the backlight but you can toggle the backlight on/off.) -We are going for sunlight readable and are using the most optimal LCD technology created for all lighting conditions (FSTN plus a backlight). Also worth noting that the device itself is not tethered to anything and therefore much easier to adjust than a screen attached to a keyboard in case you want to optimize visibility. -There will be basic editing functionality (moving cursor, word deletion, etc.) -You will be able to store multiple files. I followed up with a question about what file formats they intend to support and for clarification about the USB capability. It sounds like it appears to a computer as USB storage. I think that would be really nice. When I say "really nice," what I mean is Snoopy happy-dance levels of nice. I could make use of this gizmo.
BYOK has fully funded and is nearing the later stages of production. I am excited to receive mine soon and am really thankful to this thread for making me aware of this product!
BYOK looks pretty awesome. I already pledged for the Zerowriter but it's nice to know there are widening options for this sort of thing.
Very eager to get mine. Right after I ordered I got a folding wireless keyboard and a kickstand for my iPhone. Apple Pages on the iPhone is a surprisingly satisfying mobile writing environment. I'm not sure whether the BYOK will replace my iPhone for writing on the go. It might. The BYOK will be distraction free, probably equal to the iPhone in terms of plain text editing, and much easier to replace. I keep thinking of writing in my sailboat, anchored in a quiet cove. I'd hate to add to Davy Jones' collection of iPhones, and I don't like the idea of writing with a dependency on the cloud.
The BYOK project has announced what I guess you'd call a companion app to their writing device. From what I saw on byok.io, it looks like it provides elements of both Scrivener and Plottr. It looks very intriguing. It is not released, so there's nothing to bank on. I hope they are on to something. For the moment, I do all my writing in Mellel. The Outline pane functions as Scrivener's Draft folder, and Devonthink is my Research folder. I'm happy that way. Everybody else's mileage almost certainly varies.
It does look very nice, but it's a web app. I was unfortunately corrupted early in life. I'm not even really a Stones fan. On the other hand, hey, you, get off of my cloud...
