To generate idea lately, I have used two methods. One is watching the news and listening for an interesting story or an unusual one. Then I make a character and start a story. I find that often the character sort of takes over the story and usually works well. Another method is writing down all the objects around me. I take an object and make a story or try to find out if any of the objects are similar in anyway.
