To help you guys visualize all this...

as you can see there are a few La Grange points around Earth. The military wants the one closest to Mars as its HQ.

I imagine the space stations as large ferris wheel looking things in space that rotate to simulate gravity. The docking stations would be at the hub, and living quarters, etc at the rings.

The interiors of the space stations are huge, they're like small cities. As self-contained little wordlets, they generate their own air and grow their own produce. Occassionally they may need resources from other worlds, but they are very self-sufficient

Well, you have permission get Trin's ass moving if she's standing around. Just an FYI haha.

Technical point: Only the L4 and L5 points are stable Lagrange (sic) points. The other three are saddle points, and an object at those points will drift away.

Also, the positions of the Lagrange points are fixed relative to the positions of Earth and the Sun. The position of Mars is NOT fixed relative to the Earth or its Lagrange points withe respect to the Sun (there are also weaker Lagrange points with respect to the Earth-Moon system). Therefore, neither the L4 nor the L5 point has any strategic value wit respect to Mars. There MAY be strategic value to Mars' L4 and L5, though, even though they are well outside of the Earth's orbit and a hugely varying distance from Earth.

I recognize your space station from 2001: A Space Odyssey. :)

    arrrghhhhh...always so technical Dave:rolleyes:

well, the stations use thrusters to keep from drifting...even a tiny thrust over a long period of time should be suffient to keep several million metric tons of steel in place:)

and yes, the space station is definetely from 2001, I love that little thing =)

Well, the whole point of putting stations at Lagrange points is so they don't require thrust to maintain position, and that only worls at L4/L5 points. At the other three points, you may consune more fuel due to drift toward the red markers.

You might be better off with stations in elliptical transfer orbits between Earth's orbit and Mars' orbit around the sun.

Ah well, so long as its fun to play the technicalities arent too important in my opinion :D
although I admire how much stuff u know cogito

A station orbiting Sol between the orbits of Earth and Mars would not be effective, it would be easily bypassed by and invading/attacking force. Being within throwing distance of Earth would be a more effective planetary defense, though the station would still need mobility if it would be an effective fighting unit. Edit: scratch that, if the orbiting station was close to earth... it would work.

Back to the story, Jon do you want to describe the cabin of the transport or can we take liberties?

Oh Head Roller, r u gunna Reply to Carter? :D I reckon the transport would be a good time to develop a competetive relationship or something similiar :p

Hey, I have a question. the suspicious man that Nathan and Arc go after, would I be able to have him connected to the "Catch that Martian!" mission? It would at least make the man relevant to the story rather than a random time-passer.

Headroller: the La Grange stations don't orbit, they're stationary. And yes, please take liberties with the cabin interiors. They're basically like the cabin of a jet liner, only alot more high tech of course (it's the twenty-third century remember)

NRG: yes, if you would like to go towards the "Catch that Martian!" mission that's something that we can definetly do. NRG def seems like the spy type, always pecking away at his PDD. When the opportunity comes your characters can decide what route they want to go. The missions are designed to be either group player ones or solo player missions. Some of you I think would just rather just fly around in a starship for a bit before chasing spies and others are eager to get into firefights, or chase women;)

I just got back from work and have to handle some business, but the plan for tonight is to make a post with information on the UEAF fleets, the ship types and classes, that sort of thing.

    As promised...

    United Earth Aerospace Force

After the end of the first interstellar war, and the formation of United Earth, it was decided that a global military force should be formed, originally with the mission of defending all of Earth against possible threats. Such a military force was need all the assets needed to defend Earth's aerospace, such as sufficient launching capabilities, a credible network of monitoring and response assets, etc. The nearest Earth had to an Aerospace military at the beginning of the interstellar war was the strategic aerospace command, an inflated international bureaucracy that while only marginally effective laid the foundations for the Aerospace Force.

Since that time the role of the United Earth Armed Forced had been expanded, with the realization that the colonists of off-world colonies should also be protected until they found the means of defending themselves with their own militaries. The Aerospace Force was charged with exploring the galaxy, finding lost colonies, searching for new possible world to colonize, and keeping a vigilant eye out for developments on the frontiers of space, where United Earth had no eyes. To meet these goals the Aerospace Force fleets were created.

The La Grange space stations serve as the headquarters of Aerospace Force fleets. They are named after ancient locations and cities. The headquarters of the Aerospace Force at L2 is Olympus. The L1, L3, L4, and L5 stations are respectively: Athens, Delphi, Cyrene, and Syracuse. Each station typically headquarter an aerospace fighter wing and can field a fleet, but in the Sol system only the Olympus station houses a fleet during peace time.

Aerospace force fleets are normally named after constellations (except in the case of Sol, which does not belong to any constellation); aerospace wings are numbered, but squadrons are named after mythical beasts. Starship classes are named after Greek heroes, tragic lovers, or mentionable characters.

    Olympus fleet

Headquarters: Sol, L2 La Grange point

Ships: 2 Hercules class Cruisers, 4 Achilles class cruisers, 6 Ajax class frigates, 12 Ulysses class Corvettes, 25 Bellerophon class patrol ships, 15 Orpheus class transports

Aerospace fighter wing: 1st (Griffins, Manticores, Phantoms, and the Banshees squadrons), hundreds aerospace craft, including fighters, drop shuttles, assault shuttles, and dropships.

OK, so will the "Catch that martian!" mission occur at the L2 space station?

um, maybe? It's hard to say because that spy could be anywhere where the fleet is, and we're practically all over the galaxy

seems like you guys really wanna try that mission bad though, maybe that can be the first mission for the misfits

    Edited out.

Just editing out an insanely stupid comment before anybody capitalized on destroying me with it.

    No worries. =D

I don't know if you meant to do this or not headroller, even though it was funny, but the Commander's name is Littlefield, not Littleman. Gave me a laugh though. Just throwin' out the heads-up.

OOOO! Look! Carters all deep and stuff!!!

:D Carter will go along reluctantly with the Catch that Martian mission, although he prefers to hunt pirates or search for lost UEAF vessels etc. (OH AND SMASHING MACHINES :p)

It is a good starting mission
