    Plot Outlines Vs Winging it

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by Alex A., Jun 21, 2012.

What do you prefer? I've read on numerous websites that 'the pros' recommend writing outlines if you're a 'serious writer.' However, I've also heard from other writers and my creative writing instructor from last year that they don;t like to write outlines because it ruins the surprise and excitement of writing the story for them if everything is laid out.

I have written a few plot outlines and while it does help get a structured process and goals set up, I found it hard to slog through the slower scenes and I end up taking an extended break. I am currently writing a story with no plot outline other than the one in my head, which can be changed on a whim and I have only set a few points in the story to get to.

    What are your thoughts?
