Start with google. You'll be able to collect a lot of background info. Look for news stories from there, including crime statistics. Find out the local TV stations, and check their web sites. You will probably find news story videos. There's no real substitute for an actual visit, but you can get some decent prep work done by some solid online research.
Another method to try, though I'm not sure if it'll work, is to try a travel agent. They may be able to tell you a little about the city and even show you a few things. The library too is also a valuable place, though the information may be a little outdated it can give you insight about the history of the town, its basic lay out, and other information you may be in need of. Of course the easiest way to get information on anything is the web, but you have to be careful when using it, because more times then not, a page is created out of opinion, not facts. So make sure to check and recheck all information before using it. That way if you make a mistake, it can't be held against you.
