WritingForums.org is quickly approaching 1,000,000 posts!!! We aren't there yet, but as we approach I thought I'd have a few small giveaways to give back to the community. 1,000,000 posts will be a huge milestone, and I'm very excited to reach it. You can expect only more great things once we reach this milestone and beyond. Every 500 posts until we reach 1,000,000, we'll be giving away premium-membership and/or a related book from amazon. I initially intended to make this announcement at 995,000 posts, so expect a few winners to be announced tonight/tomorrow. The Prizes Books - 10 copies of either: Elements of Writing by Strunk and White Writing Magic: Creating Stories that Fly by Gail Carson Levine Books - 5 Copies of either: On Writing by Stephen King Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer by Roy Peter Clark If you have other equivalent suggestions for writing-related books, please suggest them! Premium Membership: - Two 1-year Supporter Memberships - Ten Six-month Supporter Memberships - Ten Three-month Supporter Memberships How to Qualify Giveaway will be either 1)randomly selected or 2) chosen by myself. We will give away at least one book and one six-month Supporter membership every 500 posts. There are a few ways to qualify: Login and post at least once every 500 posts (some winners will be randomly selected from those 500 posts) Follow us on Twitter and Facebook and Google Plus. At least one random follower/fan will win. Mention us in a tweet/post, Retweet/share a status/tweet, or otherwise engage with our social media accounts. Submit a writing-related article or writing resource. Articles and resources are moderated, and to qualify must be approved, quality, unique, and add value to our community. Logging in and posting or following us on social media is the easiest way to enter. Mentioning/Retweeting or submitting a writing article or writing resource is more difficult, but since you'll be up against less people, you'll be more likely to win. oh, and the 1,000,000 post will receive a surprise as well. We will also be announcing our next writing contest (with a prize) once we reach 1,000,000 posts. Good luck, and thank you to everyone who's made Writingforums.org the awesome community it is today.
Nope, when a winner is selected the prize will have already been selected. If you win a book you'll get to choose which one, or suggest an alternative though. I'm also open to other giveaways/suggestions if anyone has anything in mind.
Daniel, there should be penalties for post-flooding, though. Remember the bad old days of the Word Games? And there weren't even prizes for the post-counts.
Good point, hadn't thought of that. What if the random post selected to receive one of the prizes has to be substantial? Not sure how else to go about it.
How about just a polite request and then trusting people? It's not like people won't be able to see someone doing that. Another option is to make the total post count invisible when it gets close to the 1,000,000 mark. Can you do that and still see the count yourself?
Hi Daniel! I received the message that I was the first winner of the one million post giveaway. I'm totally excited! I never win anything! I would like to chose "The Elements of Writing" for my prize. Let me know if you need more info. Thanks, Mia McKimmy
I'm beginning to wonder if any of the actual community contributors will be a winner. Twitter is nice, Facebook is nice, but isn't this writingforums.org? Keyword forums? It's not over yet, but I hope we will see a few members that have helped keep the forums active win.
A few winners, more to come in the next few days - Winners of On Writing or Writing Tools @EmmaWrite @thirdwind @MiaMcKimmy (twitter handle) Winners of Elements of Writing or Writing Magic @Aled James Taylor @Dean Stride Winners of 6 Month Supporter/Premium Membership @PaulGresham @ChaosReigns @Cogito @Alesia @pg6unidef (twitter handle) @8ezshorty (twitter handle) Winners of 3 Month Supporter/Premium Membership @EmmaWrite @Dresden260 I'll message you all regarding claiming the prizes.
It's Supporter membership. It's mostly used as a way to give back to the site, but you get a few perks - the site's ad-free, there's a private supporter's forum, you get to customize your user title, and a few other things like bigger PM box/image storage space.
1,000,000 Ok I posted the one million post what do I win? Come on how could someone else not think of this first?
A few more winners! Winners of Elements of Writing or Writing Magic: @EdFromNY @Misnomer Winners of On Writing or Writing Tools @Wreybies @Thomas Kitchen Winners of Six Month Supporter Membership @MsScribble @psychotick @naim Winners of Three Month Supporter Membership @PaulGresham @jazzabel @mammamaia @Morgan Willows I'll be PMing everyone in the next few days.
dan'l... since i'm paid up for a year and on an automatic renewal, can you apply my prize to the next person to sign up as a new member?... if so, just tell them it's a welcoming gift from the site's official curmudgeonly nit-picker who hopes they'll return the favor by renewing when it runs out... love 'n hugs, m
Hooray for everyone! We are within 500 posts of the million if we haven't already passed it. Since the count isn't updated in real time, I think that solves the problem of people trying to hit the number with junk posts.
