I'm Canadian so I don't have much to say regarding American Politics. But I think Obama is a very good man, his speech was definitely awesome! I hope all goes well for his new presidency. This particular section of his speech has caught my attention.

Environmental issues are steadily increasing, and I personally think Obama will step up to the plate and focus more on environmental and peaceful agreements. Instead of creating war and causing a huge mess with things.

    Obama can dance! :D

Usual politics thread warning: any crap and this will be closed, and flamers will be infracted. You know the drill by now. But I'm serious, I'm not gonna let this turn into a fight. You've all been warned.

Unless he declares war on the entire Middle East, Russia, and China, while causing the economy to nose dive, then he can't make things worse than Bush has or would have.

I wish him the best, but I don't really believe anything will really change, at least for the better. If he can do what he says and it helps, then all power to him. But it's not likely. He does seem pretty socialist to me.

I don't really follow some of the logic because if socialism is so bad and the definition of it is a lot like what european countries have been following then why is that bad? i mean most western countries have higher ranking for health care systems. I'm sure though i have had this debate before on this board.

Anyway I wish him good luck. I think though he has such high expections it'll be hard to live up to them especially as there are things he can't of course control. I suppose as well it's a bad day for comedians Bush and Palin allowed for some great material :p.

I feel like Obama has personal goals that he is very intent on achieving. Him being president, I feel we will be brought along for the ride. And I'm okay with that.

    That said.. hooray!

Don't you remember Princess? Socialism = evil!

Well, from an American viewpoint, at least.

Wow! The stock market plunged 4% during Obama's coronation...perhaps a harbinger of things to come.

Not to completely derail this thread... but I have to agree with most Americans that socialism is bad. I for one do prefer capitalism. I don't trust the government enough to have any controling interest in the economy. They tend to screw up and overcomplicate everything they touch, I dread to see what would happen to the economy if our country became socialist.

How would you know? The only time America has had anything to do with the left, was when they were rounding up and executing communists...

Yes, you're right Xeno. My apologies, I didn't mean to be so confrontational. I'm just a little irrate from a day of nothing but news covering someone else's politics.

Uhhhh Banzai....you're too young to remember the Jimmy Carter years. Under his "leadership" (which assumed many of the same socialist premises as Obama...increased taxes, greater government deficits, gun control, increased welfare, etc) our inflation rate soared to 10% annually! Ordinary people, especially the lower income Americans, struggled to buy food and pay essentials like heating bills. Ronald Reagan became president and the economy straightened out...in fact it boomed. Coincidentally, Carter also could not handle the terrorism of the Iranian hostage situation or threats from Russia. He weakened us terribly with a program very similar to Obama's.

I'm Dutch. American's left wing is what we call extreme right in my country. Let's just hope Obama has the clarity of mind to see the weakness of America's current system.

As far as the speech goes, I have to agree with Show that it was just a speech. He has to show me what he is capable of before I decide wether or not he is our savior. And I call him 'our' savior; if Obama messes up, Europe will collapse the next day. But if he can do everything he promised... Then we are in for one hell of a time.

Problem is that he has promised more than any human can do. He has inflated the bubble of expectations way too big; Big bubbles burt!

I'm not sure he's done the inflating, to be honest. Everyone else has done that for him...

That's what I've been trying to say. (But not the Dutch bit... I'm British...)

He's definitely helped. I think he'll get a free pass for a while, but eventually, America is going to want to collect on the promises they elected him for, and if he can't pay up, he'll pay in other ways.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he have to be impeached for actually doing something wrong? Not simply because you supported the opposition?

I dont know a lot about politics (just the bare skeleton, compared to many of you, but quite a bit in comparison to others), but I know what I stand for --and I know what Obama stands for, and I'm very excited to see what's going to happen for America.

I absolutely loved his speech. I'm not saying that I agree with everything Obama had to say (though a great deal of it I did..), but he's a fabulous speaker, and this inauguration was one of the most monumental in America's history. (Plus, it was quite amusing to see my Spanish teacher weep. :p ) Not only did we say goodbye to the man who will likely join Warren G Harding as one of the worst presidents in history, but we said hello to an African American man who brings a great deal of our citizens hope and has a lot of big plans (whether you agree with them or not) in store for our country.

As a young person myself, I'm very excited to see what Obama will leave for our generation. He's bound to do a lot for us --not only do I see him as compassionate individual at all, but on a personal level, he has two young daughters; I know if I were in his place, I'd hope to make the best world I could for them.

And socialist or not, I support the redistribution of wealth among almost all of his other plans (though I'm most enthused about the situation in Guantanamo; thank goodness!). --Mind you, I come from a very upscale city in which households average around $100,000 per capita income. I say that so you know exactly where I and those around me stand financially, and how much we will be losing. But I dont care; if I can help someone out --as President Obama said: by working less hours so that someone else has more, or giving away a sliver of my financial cut (which, to be quite honest, we wont miss all that much anyway), I'll be more than happy to. Does that make me a socialist? I dont know much about that form of government (blame the school system; I'm an American student! :p ), but if it does, I have no problem with that.

Anyways. Point is, I'm very happy with our new president and hope that he can live up to at least some of his promises and fulfill at least some of the things he hopes to achieve. We certainly need it.
And Show --yes, he's made a lot of promises to the American people, but he's said several times that it wont happen in four years, but we can at least get started. :)
