Nah, all those examples are already covered by the self-publishing “I’ll design the cover myself” people. I dunno, they just all seem to follow the same template these days. Every book jacket design is a mere variation of the same thing.
I once checked an old sci-fi book out of the library solely because the cover had a monkey riding an elephant while holding a shotgun. I knew there was no way that story could be boring—and it delivered, as I recall.
Ack-Ack Macaque? Ah, no, after Googling I see he isn't riding an elephant, at least on the cover I could find. Also not that old of a book.
Next time im shelving, i have to remember to take a picture of some if the more interesting ones (Lmao! I love that cover, @AntPoems !)
The best way to demonstrate how fay covers have become is to look up some old titles, and then compare them with their modern day re-published version. I did this a while ago when looking for books on food. I’ll see if I can find the post. Found it. A quick search on me and ‘book covers’ reveals I’ve ranted about this to quite some degree. https://www.writingforums.org/threads/things-that-annoy-me-but-shouldnt-part-2.171057/page-21#post-1963478
If it looks like it could be on the side of a van, a la Frank Frazetta, I'm picking it up. I wonder if people are going to start using those AI art programs to create covers.
Only thing i can say is.... If a book is published as a hardcover, when it comes out in paperback, the cover tends to be different. In the examples you gave, those were paperback and hard cover editions (the more interesting cover for the Sweet Life in Paris was the hardcover). Covers also vary depending on international sales too. I had an author for a program that said she didnt like the international cover of her book and asked for a new one. The UK edition og The Hate U Give is different from the US cover, too.... Though i think both look pretty interesting (Id post pictures but forwhatever reason, i cant from my phone) Now that I'm home.... my library has 2 versions of The Hate U Give: the International version that I ordered from Amazon because our vender was all sold out of it (picture 1) and then the US version:
are these references to existing book-covers or did you just come up with them? (I'll take the upskirt shot by the way)
Huh, when I had my amputation, the surgeon at first said (on Monday), "Why don't you come in on Wednesday and I'll do it for you". I said "Woah, waiddaminute. Too soon!". So I got an extra week. Couldn't put it off forever.
Yeah, I'll bet you someone's come across tha—[User has been banned for vulgarity, being unable to resist low-hanging fruit]
Nah, we're adult members (ass) having an intelligent discussion (nut sack) on a topic relevant (ass) to our field (nut sack). As George Carlin used to say, it's not words that are the problem, it's the assholes using them. ETA: having said that, let's not take advantage of management's largesse to spam the forum with gratuitous vulgarity for gratuitous vulgarity's sake.
Oh, hadn’t realised that (not that PB covers were different in design to their HB counterpart, I mean, just that my examples were such). Anyway, I still say modem day book jacket design is far too wishy-washy.
