I expect it's based on your income and relative wealth. Obviously Bezos can look at your browsing history and see "here's a man who smokes cigars, he can afford to pay more for his chair" I just looked on eBay and there's about a grillion of 'em starting at seven quid... because I am poor.
the otherthing that happens on amazon is that vendors put the price stupid high when they don't have any stock, and then mark it down as a massive discount when stock comes in. also some of the high prices are for muliple buys like there's one that's £99 but its for thirty stackable chairs but there are still cheaper options on amazon too
I found some in B&M at £15 each. I turned my nose up at them believing I could find much cheaper. I think I’m probably just out of date when it comes to the price of stuff.
That has never happened to me... but then I have never ordered a £7 chair. Maybe I should try it, an artificial cheese plant would be good in the camper... I did spend two ******* hours in an online chat thingy with eBay yesterday to try to get their new, super-duper "seller onboarding" working (I have been a seller on eBay for over a decade... I have always resisted giving them any more personal information than is absolutely necessary because I don't trust them with it, but they now need to text a "one time passcode" so that they can lose my mobile number to hackers). Eventually they gave up and conceded that their software had a bug; FFS don't they test this shit before putting it live? They are a multi-billion dollar, global operation. Ten minutes of testing would have prevented that - it kept me awake all afternoon!
Just heard a commercial on talk radio trying to recruit conservation officers in my state. Wasn't that long ago that there was a waiting list for the opportunity to apply for those jobs.
Amazing, isn't it? If I wanted to go back into the work force fulltime, I could make a lot more money per hour than I'm making now. Fast food workers are making what I make and the restaurants can't hire enough to keep the dining rooms open- drive through only. One wonders how much people sitting in lines of idling cars add to pollution. The college is dangling the promise of a raise in front of us, but I suspect this time, as most times, part time workers will be left in the lurch. Sometimes on a slow day, I contemplate organizing the part timers into striking. So many part time jobs, including my own, are the result of the college dividing one formerly full time benefited position into two non-benefited part time positions.
That's not far off. Back around the turn of the century Amazon was busted for charging higher prices to people who's cookies revealed they were a past customer. This is one reason I never do brand loyalty. It's just another thing that the man uses to rip you off.
My daughter and son-in-law dream of living near the Pacific coast and spent a lot of time looking for a place they could afford. They never found anything they could afford that wasn't junk, and they had a pretty decent budget for a place. Just for fun and games I checked house prices in Oceanside. A 1100 square foot condo costs half a million dollars and up. A 600 square foot house trailer in not so great condition was the cheapest thing I saw at 125,ooo. Holy hell, y'all.
I don't know the situation now, but I remember a few times in the last 5-10 years where I'd find a book on Amazon via a google search. Not logged in to Amazon, the price would be $x, but when I logged in it went up to like $x+$5, big jump. Those books never got bought, fuck Bezos.
I'd sure like to know where that 125k trailer is at. The main drag through town, old CA Hwy 1, runs about half mile from the beach. West of that you can't touch 1100 sqft for under a megabuck.
What parts of the Pacific Coast were they looking at? It's quite long. I imagine you could find a pretty cheap place in Peru.
Hey, look! a 20'x 20' box for only $60,000. Who says there are no bargains in Hawaii? For only $550,000 more, you can get a slightly larger box (720 square feet) with a nice view.
Barking muffins? I was just being salty that for years the 4-pack of assorted muffins was $3.99 at the grocery store bakery. During the pandemic they went up to $4.49... okay, not a big deal. Then suddenly BOOM $5.49. More importantly though gas prices just launched about 30 cents per gallon overnight. Thanks, Russia.
My wife lived there in the early sixties at the age of five and six when her dad was stationed there in the marines. I expect it has gentrified some.
The developed areas from the Mexican Border to just past Santa Barbara have a demand that far outstrips the supply. Newport Beach and Pacific Palisades to name two. Malibu? Your neighbors are all movie, or rock stars, or industry heavyweights.
