Speaking of getting old, which I seriously thought was going to take longer, I’m feeling my age today. Years ago I fell from the roof of a two story Colonial Revival house. I got up, dusted myself off, and went back to work. My boss dragged me to the doc-in-a-box urgentcare place down the street; threatened to fire me if I didn’t go. They called me a liar. They felt it just wasn’t possible I fell two stories and got up and walked in there. Today I cracked my head on something in my basement and I’m ready to go back to bed.
I ordered a beer at a restaurant last week and was carded; the gray beard and hair didn't hint that I might be over 21? Eisenhower was president when I was born. My favorite "they don't know who that is" story... I was buying records (yes, vinyl records) for songs the band needed to learn, and two younger girls were also browsing. One of them picked up Rubber Soul and exclaimed "Look!!! Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings!"
Shortly before I turned 21 I was stationed in Texas and went shopping for ammo because my buddy and I were going to the civilian range for the day. I was told that I couldn't buy .22lr because "It's a pistol cartridge and you're too young to own a pistol." The boxes of 7.62NATO were not an issue, however. That was also an old Dennis Miller ad for VH-1, back when it was advertised as a more "mature" alternative to MTV (back when MTV played music).
I remember about 15 years+\- ago Paul McCartney played a show with Kanye West, and social media types were all abuzz about how magnanimous it was of Kanye to give that old man his big break.
The first time I was served a beer in a bar I was seventeen. I looked old for my age back then, and they were a lot looser about carding (1972) In a very lucky irony now in my sixties I can pass for five years younger.
Someone said it was cool that David Bowie had covered Nirvana and he blew up at them. Justifiably, IMO.
the funnier thing about that was the original person who said it was joking, but most of the twitterati who piled in after didnt get the joke and agreed like it was serious
Does anyone remember side vent windows on your car? I really miss them; they were great for letting a little air into the car without opening the big window. Especially great in rain & snow.
There are a lot of old .22lr revolvers out there, as well as the Ruger Mk1 and follow-ons. A few .22lr "ladies'" pocket pistols exist as well. I'm guessing that the law said if it fits in a pistol it's a pistol cartridge. Like this little Saturday Night Special in .50 BMG. It's a real production gun.
I recently saw a pistol that fires 7.62x39... theres probably one that fires 7.62 nato as well.. the whole division of pistol vs rifle calibres is essentially meaningless
Ah, but you aren't a lawmaker opposed to guns. And my feelings on private gun ownership are complex and have evolved over the years, but many of the folks strongly opposed to them show an expertise and knowledge that reminds me of Mr. King. I'd feel better if the people writing the laws knew which end was the dangerous one, I guess is what I'm saying, but that's Debate Room territory so I'll stop here.
Yup, and many cars and trucks also had adjustable vents in the kick panels. (Not to mention a bright-headlight foot switch.)

These days they don't bother driving the car away. Around Providence, we have "pit crews" in vans that jack the car up onto cinder blocks, steal the rims, catalytic converter, and anything valuable inside before driving away. They use minors who can't be prosecuted for the leg work and have two spotter cars stationed to look for cops. One car typically blocks the entrance to the parking lot while the other cruises around the block with a cell phone on speaker. In and out in like 3 minuted according to my cop friends, who will eventually bust the ring only to see another crew pop up a few weeks later.
Meanwhile in Ukraine farmers are stealing Russian tanks and BTRs that have broken down, run out of fuel, or got stuck and breaking g them up for scrap
I can remember the bad old days in the NY Metro area (late 70s/early 80s). The South Bronx looked like WWII London during the blitz with all of the burned out and abandoned buildings. Crime was high. If your car broke down on I95 (through the Bronx to the George Washington Bridge) it would be stripped by the time you walked back from calling a tow truck.
Foothill Blvd in Sylmar CA in the early 2000s. Walking down the street I came across a nearly brand new Honda Accord parked by the curb. Just the unibody frame. It had been completely stripped by the chop shop piranha. The cheap bastards didn't even bother with cinder blocks.
