Funny how math seems to rule everything, then you see how geometry rules math. For any positive numbers A and B, A-squared plus B-squared is never less than 2AB, and if A-squared plus B-squared equals 2AB, then A equals B. I have no idea why that matters.
Only because it was Santana's first appearance anywhere. After that I'll bet they started making more.
I think lots of firefighters will tell you they go on many more medical calls than fires, when there are EMTs or similar on fire trucks (or apparatus as they call them here).
If a-b>=0 then (a-b)^2 >= 0 a^2 + b^2 - 2ab >= 0 implies a^2 + b^2 >= 2ab If a-b=0 then (a-b)^2 = 0 a^2 + b^2 - 2ab = 0 implies a^2 + b^2 = 2ab Reference: https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/help-with-the-proof.693415/ (But that's algebra, not geometry)
In the Uk Fire and ambulance are separate services. the fire brigade only do fire and rescue (car accidents etc), while the ambulance service do ambulances, and paramedics
You got me, but I still like to think of it as geometry because a ruler and construction proof is how I came to notice the relationship. Another one that fascinated me was take a line segment and call it length B. Put a dot anywhere along its length. Call the left portion A and the right portion C. For any length B, and for anywhere the dot goes on that segment, A^2 + B^2 - 2ab = C^2. Like your elegant algebra, it's just an example of Pythagoras. Being a math dummy, those relationships fascinated me with their mechanics.
A group of scientists were asked to pick out what they thought was the most beautiful math equation. (You can see some of those that were nominated at the link below). I like this one—The Lagrangian of the Electroweak Theory, which unites two fundamental forces—electromagnetism and the weak force—in one equation. It has a certain je-ne-sais-quoi. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/scientists-pick-the-most-beautiful-equations/
Fire and ambulance are separate services here, too. Ambulance is privately owned by the hospital. Fire is a community service. They usually work in unison along with LE for the good of a victim. A firefighter often rides to the hospital in the back of an ambulance to continue victim care begun at the scene.
That's usually a bit of symbolism—externalization of internal states. The physical damage represents the psychological or emotional damage so it can be seen. This is actually what Cronenberg was doing with all his body horror—it was literally an externalization of the changes going on inside the characters at a psychological level. It's also behind for instance the transformation of Dr. Jeckyl into Mister Hyde. Stephenson got the idea from a dream, a good doctor of solid reputation and sterling character takes a potion and unleashes the hidden inner beast, the Freudian Id that just wants to act on its every impulse without inhibition. It's something we do at times, but in the story it was represented physically by the transformation.
Quite a while back I wrote something about being convinced that I -- at least -- am plagued by some sort of imp or fairy or some other being that hides things for a while, then returns them. Well, this is more of that. I went to the Y today and the receptionist said, "I think I have your lost cell phone." She held it up, and it was. She said she found it in the safe that morning, having not been there for the past 3 days -- she is very reliable and searched very hard -- and she had no idea who put it there. There was a note that said it was found in the locker room. Okay, I was there, but I was/am sure I dropped it in the parking lot. And anyway there is the question of who turned it off, and where it was for 3 days? I know there's an "earthly" explanation, but these things sure happen to me a lot. Even websites devoted to it, e.g. https://mysteriousuniverse.org/2016/11/the-weird-world-of-vanishing-and-teleporting-objects/#:~:text=There%20is%20an%20actual%20name%20for%20this%20type,spontaneously%20vanishing%2C%20teleporting%2C%20or%20appearing%20out%20of%20nowhere: "There is an actual name for this type of phenomena, and it is called simply the “Disappearing Object Phenomenon,” or DOP, which entails objects spontaneously vanishing, teleporting, or appearing out of nowhere."
@GrahamLewis Here's an idea—this should be done whenever a lost phone turns up anywhere. Take said lost phone on a whirwind around-the-world journey and take pictures at all kinds of crazy locations with it for three days before returning it to the owner. Ok, three days isn't long enough to go around the world, but at least fill it with pics and video of partying with hookers.
You might want to take a look at the Reddit sub r/Glitch_In_The_Matrix. But then again probably not as it’s Reddit.
