My appetite for anything substantial has died. I've been living off tomato soup and buttered bread for the last week or so.

Thought of this writing exercise: write a 150 page novella in 2 weeks and focus on finishing a story rather than writing something nice. Just as an exercise to actually finish something for once.

It is... for the first two or three days.
Least it proves I could survive... so long as I have tinned goods.

I get the flames, and the smoke and the magma, but what's with the lightning?

    It's a thing.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_lightning

Volcanic lightning is an electrical discharge caused by a volcanic eruption, rather than from an ordinary thunderstorm. Volcanic lightning arises from colliding, fragmenting particles of volcanic ash (and sometimes ice),[1][2] which generate static electricity within the volcanic plume[3], leading to the name dirty thunderstorm[4][5]. Moist convection and ice formation also drive the eruption plume dynamics[6][7] and can trigger volcanic lightning.[8][9] But unlike ordinary thunderstorms, volcanic lightning can also occur before any ice crystals have formed in the ash cloud.[10][11]

The earliest recorded observations of volcanic lightning[12] are from Pliny the Younger, describing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, "There was a most intense darkness rendered more appalling by the fitful gleam of torches at intervals obscured by the transient blaze of lightning."[13] The first studies of volcanic lightning were also conducted at Mount Vesuvius by Professor Palmieri who observed the eruptions of 1858, 1861, 1868, and 1872 from the Vesuvius Observatory. These eruptions often included lightning activity.[13]

I'm told that with the right chemical mix altering your brainwaves this looks like a mild-mannered veteran giving instruction on how to paint.

Those drugs are banned here with good reason.

We have reached the point of the evening where my body realizes we haven't had enough calories in the day even though we've eaten more today than normal and now EVERYTHING IS A SNACK AND I WILL FEAST.

Interesting how we all (or mostly all) have a lot more time for writing, but the number of blog entries and contest votes are way down. I suspect most, like me, find easier to post in the forums than get down to serious writing or thinking about same. Funny how that works, how many writers and would-be writers think they would almost die for a chance to have nothing to do but write, and here we are, almost dead and with little else to do but write.

Of course I could be dead wrong, and everyone is working on a version of the great American novel, only surfacing briefly to grab a breath and maybe post in a forum. I just know for sure it ain't me.
