First I've heard of this, and I'm now guessing that it's some sort of energy drink, rather than the advanced yoga technique I first assumed it was...

I originally assumed it was some sort of spread

But then I assumed it was some sort of carbonated drink—like Hanson's sodas

Now I'm with you, but am still having a difficult time processing both energy drink & fizzy drink constituting a single beverage, especially one tasting of raspberry/blackberry

Yerba mate is a traditional drink from South America. I think the fizziness was also added by the American business that produced this...let's call it "fusion" product.

No it looks like a beverage of some sort. Carbonated with something to do with South America.

To be honest between what you said originally, I had never heard of it.
Also Yerba is like some kind of herb for tea it seems.

Glad to hear it's good for something, because it's horrible for drinking.

I can't tell if she's looking at him or looking at the drumstick

Me, I'd be gazing longingly & lovingly with a fervent intensity at the chicken—hands down, no question

We don't know where that drumstick is going, or where it's been.

By which I, of course, mean the suburbs of Philadelphia....

I started wondering about the phrase "hands down" when you are saying something is an absolute certainty

    Like that's rather odd

Person A: Would you rather go to Universals Studios or Disneyland?
Person B: Oh, Universal Studios, hands down. MUCH less chaotic & fewer kids with meltdowns

    Why say hands down?

Then I remembered I just wrote myself "hands down, no question" which I don't often use or hear in conjunction but felt right to overstate it

And now I strongly suspect it's because you raise your hand when you have a question

But I don't in fact know whether "hands down" originated in tandem with"no question"

I mean, I could look it up on the interwebs, but then what thought would I have to foster in the back of mind all of morning work shift?

I always thought "hands down" referred to poker games, when you lay down your hand when you're sure you've won. You might say, "Read 'em and weep" in that situation.

Its from horse racing - a jockey has to keep a tight grip on the reins to encourage his horse to run as fast as it can, therefore one who has loosened his grip into the hands down position is winning easily... hence winning hands down

Yeah, I looked it up as soon as my first shift was over

What was interesting is that when I looked it up, I saw a lot of people brought a wide & varied array of personal interpretations for the expression which was just as interesting to read as the origin of the expression

Where are people ignoring you? Did you make a post no one responded to? Is it a Workshop post?

So long as it's not out of my comfort zone, I can give you a response?

Oh no, nobody (as far as I know) is ignoring me, that's just what shows if you officially ignore someone. I just like to sow confusion...

You were successful: I was confused

I visited your post history to check for anything I could respond to

Mostly I got hungry at photo of 焼肉

If you'd posted a shot of お好み焼き, I probably would've died inside

Why is that the only Japanese food I can't seem to find sold stateside??

Edit: How do you explain/describe お好み焼き to foreigners?

I find people using "pizza" or "pancakes" a lot, but both of those comparisons feel very wrong to me

Savory pancakes is the common translation. Doesn't cover it, but it's close.

Do you prefer Kansai style or Hiroshima style?

Or are you more a もんじゃ焼き person?

Or do you blasphemously not really like お好み焼き at all?

(I don't know why, but I really like all the junky foods from Osaka. I like straight up traditional, prettier, healthier Japanese cuisine—but if there is yaki somewhere in the name, I would probably eat that first & foremost in a heartbeat)

I almost had もんじゃ焼き once, but someone was sick on the teppan, and we couldn't tell which was what...

I think I've only had kansai style okonomiyaki, but that's just because I'm an Osaka boy by residency and marriage. Honestly though, I prefer foods that lead off with やき to those that end in it.
