The fact that the effect lasts about a week is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Also, I'm sure other forms of writing (poetry, plays, etc.) have a similar effect.

Yeah - that thought entered my mind, too. (Although I have way too many books in my TBR pile.)

The article made me think, though, that the same thing could (should?) happen in some nonfiction books as well.

    I like non-fiction where I learn something I didn't know.

I'm waiting for my library hold on"Book of Ages -The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin" By Jill Lepore to bear fruit. There are so many important women in history that have not had their due. Ben Franklin's sister is one of them.

I bought that for my MIL for Christmas. (Sadly, she liked it -- I was all ready to take it if she didn't want it or had already read it -- actually, that was the case with all the books I bought for my family this year ;-)
I expect that I'll be able to get that book cheap in about a year. (Which given the number of books I need to read, would be the minimum length of time before I could get to it, anyway.) Either it will go on bargain, or I'll be able to get it used, in like new condition, or maybe at a used bookstore where I have trade-in credit.

I gave up trying to own more books when the room in the house we use for the library became almost too crowded to walk into.

Yeah, I know how that is -- the bookshelves in my office collapsed, and I've been accused of being a hoarder. But once we get this wall of bookshelves installed, those shelves filled with books are gonna look totally awesome.
The library is hard for me -- sometimes they don't have the book I want, but when they do, the issue is that I have to read it right then, at the time they have it in. And I have to get it back on time. My problem is that I never know when I'm going to be in the mood for a certain type of book (or even a certain book.) I love looking through my stack when I've finished a book and determining what I'm going to read next. Sometimes I read a chapter of several before I decide, and even though I think I've decided on one, at the last second I end up with another.
