Dune is a wonderful Sci-Fi book, and it really is the first great sci-fi book. Warning though, it's not for the faint of mind, It's quite a complex book.

A few others that may work "A Wrinkle in time" or Falling Sideways (I forget who wrote that one)

in fact, here's a nice list of the top 100 sci fi books

These are the top ten of the list

    Orson Scott Card Ender's Game [S1] 1985
    Frank Herbert Dune [S1] 1965
    Isaac Asimov Foundation [S1-3] 1951
Douglas Adams Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy [S1] 1979
    George Orwell 1984 1949
Robert A Heinlein Stranger in a Strange Land 1961
    Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451 1954
    Arthur C Clarke 2001: A Space Odyssey 1968

It's not sci-fi, but I read a really enjoyable book called: Spellwright

A new author, the book came out last year. There's magic, but it's not like Harry Potter at all. Unique IMO.

Any book on Mystic's list is definitely worth reading, though as to other suggestions I'm not sure I would go for Wheel of Time: the books drag on a lot, with artificial sub plots created in each book that seem to be only there to extend the story's longevity.

And I know this isn't in the same genre as the discussions have been going, but Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series is a really fantastic work of fiction.

I'd reccommend H.P. Lovecraft. One, because I love him, two, because I do genuinely think you'd like him. Try Herbert West: Reanimator, The Colour Out of Space, From Beyond etc etc etc
It's true most of his stuff is classed as horror but there's some fantasy/sci-fi thrown in. I'd just reccommend searching him and having a good ole peruse.
