Finally, over two months into the year, I have my first rejection, on a reprint submission to Mysterion. So I’m now sitting at a 50% acceptance rate for 2023.
depends on genre I think. Like it or not bigger books cost more to manufacture. I think most debuts are 90k or less save fantasy and SF where it can be higher. I’m writing SF and determined to keep my debut at below 110k
Commiserations. You'll never get to 100 rejections that way. Just keep trying. But seriously, well done. Glad for you!
3-day rejection from CatsCast. Does it sound like a higher tier rejection? ‘Unfortunately, this story wasn’t a good fit for us. It's a good story and I'm sure you'll be able to sell it somewhere, but between the cat death and the violent robot cat, it has a little too much cat-darkness for CatsCast (it's very close, though). We wish you the best in finding this one a good home, and we look forward to your next submission.’
This sounds like a personal rejection given that they mention specifics from your story. And that they said it was close!
A rejection yesterday (sent in January) and another over the weekend (sent in February) Still waiting on update about the two full requests.
44 (however once again QT added 2 more rejections to my rejection list but I didnt get any additional notifications. I'm assuming they are probably from the submissions I submitted through QueryManager. Maybe QT is updating before I receive the automated email rejections since they are the same system....)
5-day form rejection from Bullshit Magazine, tough the y did say they'd "look forward to hearing more from you in the future!" I have my suspicions, though. That might just be bs. I'm at sweet 16.
Lol, great name for a lit mag. And they’re based in Philly! I might just have to send them something to reject.
A 365-day no response/rejection from The Atlantic. I know I could have logged this one sooner, but I decided to way for that year mark or until I had something good to try them again with. They only respond if interested. FYI -- This is not my oldest submission. Still holding out for the others that do send rejection notices if they're not interested. 2023 rejection count: 37
I’ve just had a sad rejection from a new magazine called The YA Speculative: It is with great regret we write to tell you that we are unable to feature your flash fiction entry in our magazine even though we would have selected you. Despite our best efforts we did not receive enough quality submissions to run an edition. Please be assured we have tried to look at all possible ways of running this edition with no success. We have closed the website for now while we work on a better marketing strategy. Apologies and thanks again for your support.
That's a shame, though hard to believe. They aren't listed in Duotrope, near as I can see. Might be a place for them to start to attract more submissions.
I got ghosted by the Asahi Haikuist Network. In September, before I wrote my most controversial poems, they got back to me the next day and accepted my haiku. Last month, I sent them some haikus for this month’s themed issues, and two of them have been published already… still no letter, not even a form rejection. My friends have had the same happen to them with other magazines since they’ve written more poems about their controversial opinions. But we believe that these messages need to at least be heard by people. Then my friend and I both got form rejections from guest editors of a magazine that publishes work like ours, because (as I later learned) they’re the kind of poets who hate rhyme and meter. So, we’re both sending them somewhere else that doesn’t.
