The administartor selects the formula that determines how rep-giving power accrues, and how much it must be spread around before you can rep the same person again.

Every new mwember begins with 10 rep points. and no rep-giving power. The rep giving power depends on your own current rep points and your total post count. There may be other factors as well.

Each dark green box represents 100 rep points (or portion thereof), and each light green box represents up to 200 rep points.

Giving negative rep is discouraged. Complaints about posts should be handled with the report post icon [IMG] instead.

Join date also seems to be a factor.

Well, the longer you've been here, the more likely your post count and rep are to have risen, but I don't think it has any direct effect.

I believe every year you're here adds one to your rep giving power. IE, in November you will give 2 points when you rep someone just on time as a member. I believe you also give one per 100 rep points you have and one for every 500 posts. There's a thread about it somewhere on the site.

I think you have to have a certain number of posts in order to give reputation. Otherwise you just end up giving neutral rep.

That's correct. Unless something has changed it's when you reach Senior Member (100 posts).

Not true. If you have received enough rep points, you could give rep after posting one post. Obviously it was on helluva post!

    Thankee Muchlee. :D

I didn't know that. I'd venture to guess one hit from you would put someone in that category if so. :D I'd say you throw about 50 points.

Unless Daniel has posted the exact formula for this sitem and hasn't changed the formula, there's no way of telling the exact rep-giving power of someone without giving a test rep to a cooperating member who can calculate the change in rep. The exact formula is a set of vBulletin config settings.

I remember someone talking about this subject when I first signed up last year and I knew a member posted a link to this answer from Daniel. Took a minute or so with the search function. And like you said, as long as he hasn't changed it in the interim. This was what I was quoting from memory. https://www.writingforums.org/showthread.php?t=426

Actually, I have a question too. How can I see my rep? (I don't have any yet but just curious)

You won't see anything until someone reps you for the first time, though.

garmar is talking about the reputation lines in the member's UserCP. The reputation section, only visible to that user, will not appear at all if there are no reputation entries. The initial ten points that all members begin with don't count, because they are not given by a member, so there is no reputation line associated with it.

The grey boxes are people who don't have sufficient rep-giving power to affect your reputation one way or another - usually new members, but in theory it could be someone with high negative rep of their own.

Of course, we strongly discourage the use of negative rep on this site. If someone takes issue with a post, they are expected to use the Report Post icon [IMG], not direct communication with that member.

The same standards apply to reputation as to all other forum communications. Personal attacks and insulting other members are prohibited, and are subject to infractions or other disciplinary actions.

A point total of 365 is a net positive reputation of that many points. But the number of points conferred by each reputation comment depends on several factors, including the donor's reputation level, total post count, and seniority on the site.

    thanks, for the additional info...

but since there's no way to tell who left the comment and there's no alert button on the cp page, how do we do that?...

You can send a private message to the moderators, describing the message your received and the date issued, and the moderator will investigate and take whatever action is necessary.

Cog was just saying that if someone doesn't like your post, they are expected to report it, so the mods can check it out and decide whether or not the complaint is valid and resolve the matter however they deem appropriate, rather than harassing you via PM or "punishing" you with negative rep.

Beside the comment field, you'll find a link to the thread containing your post. If you click the link, it will take you directly to that post. From there you might guess who it was. . . but that's about it.

Edit: Cog, are you able to find out who left rep?

Yes, we can. And using rep for spiteful purposes, or to insult other members, will be infracted if brought to the attention of the moderator team.

I urge all members to refrain from giving negative rep. They will be held accountable for their actions.

Respect your fellow members! Besides, taking anonymous potshots is cowardly and infantile.
