    Right spelling for "centurian"?

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Spacer, Jan 17, 2011.

What is the proper adjective for someone who is a hundred years old? I suppose it's "century" with "-ian" which eats the 'y' to become "centurian" but Goggle doesn't turn up any uses of that, and spell checkers only offer centurion which has a different meaning and is a noun.

    Correct.

One might employ a centurion to guard the fragile centenarians. ;)

And for those lucky few over 100, supercentenarian is sometimes used.

Wikipedia says "supercentenarian" is over 110. Centenerarian is >100, not exactly 100.

Actually, that's what I meant to say. *blushes*

I used to obsessively follow the list of oldest people.

Hey El - just a thought. Are your immortals in SCA? "No, no! The chainmail should be tighter here and kinda drop there!" ;)

I imagine him to be still be a hit with the ladies as well. ;)

HEre in Japan I went to a Kendo match and watched a player obliterate everyone. He took his helmet off and revealed himself, at least to me, as a man over 80 years old! He is the second oldest tournament practicioner in his particular style.
