A well-known and well-loved author in science fiction / fantasy: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/24/arts/anne-mccaffrey-dragonriders-author-dies-at-85.html
I don't often respond in these threads, but Anne was my very introduction to science fiction and fantasy with her Pern novels. I still have the very copies, battered and torn, that were bought for me when I was 8 or 9. May she ride dragons of gold and bronze in the next life.
Awww, that's a shame. I've not heard of her, or read her works, but it's always a shame to lose a fellow scribbler.

Really? You need to read some good Pernography. Her dragonriders of Pern novels are a delightful blend of science fiction and fantasy.
They are, and as regards the oft asked question of fantasy without magic, her books are some of the better examples.
