I've just seen the news that one of my favourite authors has passed away. For those of you who aren't familiar with her, Anne McCaffrey was one of the greats of science fiction. She was the first woman to win the Hugo and Nebula awards, and wrote the phenomenally successful Dragonriders of Pern series. If you haven't read her work, you should definitely go and take a look- she was one of my biggest inspirations to become a writer. RIP Anne McCaffrey.
I met her around 1988. She lived about five miles from where I lived then and a mutual friend invited me to a party at her house, which was called something like "Dragon's Lair". I've never read any of her books though!
A little strange. I asked my wife and it wasn't at her house I met her. Apparently her house is unforgettable. It was at a party at another's house. Many of them were writers. At least a few other very succesful writers ( my friend's wife) and a bunch of others and she was the only one who didn't seem to be completely up her own backside. I'd kill to be in the company of those people now!
