I've got a fantasy RPG that I've been letting simmer for a while now. Kind of a eregorn/LOTR/last airbender thing. Its almost ready, but I figured people would be burnt out after the crimson rose. Sounds like I was wrong.
I didn't participate in Crimson Rose, but if a space opera one doesn't happen, I would still love to do an RPG like that.
It looks like there's plenty of people interested in the space opera thing, so when should we start on that? I've never started a RP before, and I dunno how this stuff works on this site, but I'd be willing to help start it off.
I'd start one, but I've only done fantasy RPs before. I'm not sure how to work a Science fiction RP, but I'd be glad to join one as a player and find out!
Well apparently I'm wrong (just looked it up) but I've always felt that space operas were less like Epics and more like series. As for Sci-Fi, never wrote one, never thought of writing one. Although, I've participated (sorta) so it ought to work just as a normal RP.
The thing with a fantasy RP though (in my EXTREMELY limited experience) is that character development is enhanced by developing and creatively using powers of some kind. In a Sci-Fi RP what would there be to keep the battles interesting and everyone's moves unique and surprising? I'm not against it, just curious.
We might just have to rely on the writers to vary it a little bit. Maybe moves and events can be based on the character's profession. Hopefully the writers would know when something is too out of the ordinary for their character.
Well, to whomever decides to start any RP, just do whatever RP you guys feel comfortable with. AS long as one gets started, no matter if its Sci-fi, post-apoc, or fantasy, just start one. haha.
Think star trek. How does Picard relay who Picard really is? Through his decisions and through his speech. Of course, battle wise, we can always change up how the ships work. Maybe laser cannons haven't been developed yet. We have big ships, but because projectile weapons would rock the ship, and no large enough energy weapons have been developed, troops of soldiers in space suits must be used. They could use small energy weapons or could offset the force of a gun firing with small thrusters. Or they could use melee weapons. And there's always the small manned craft (plus gundam style mechs) The key would be to make the fighters become more individualized for the combat.
Cog, with the archives passworded people cannot read past games. Is it not possible to allow read-only access instead of the passwording?
I was considering an idea. How about a "fantasy" RP with people trying to escape hell? "Days became nights and nights became days. We no longer were aware when we use to live, what time period, or how old we were. We were simply trap souls behind each door. Behind each sin. But then maybe being reborn into this hell had made us a little crazy and we began to conspire thoughts. Free thoughts. Prisoners who wanted freedom at all cost."
Hey, I've got a question. What do you guys think about a murder mystery RPG. For example, I could start off giving a list of suspects in the game and only I would know who the murderer is. Each character would make their own 'detectives' and investigate. I'd have to work on it and how it would work, but do you guys think it could be fun.
Yeah, I've never made my own RPG before, so it could be hard. But, I guess if I plan it all out, I can see what problems might arise and fix them before I start the game.
Sounds awesome! Might be a bit tedious though considering everyone is going to be looking for clues and you'll have to keep track and manage how close they are to actually nailing the crime. It would be very interesting to see though :]
Well, I've got plenty of time to work on it, I'm not releasing it for a while since I'm already in PAX.
Suggestion: If you move ahead with it, set a deadline. Put time pressure on the players, and keep the story moving. Add new developments at regular intervals, and anyone who fails to keep up - too bad.
^Agreed. If you decide to create an RPG like this, you have to realize that it will not be like any other RPG you'll see on here. You're going to need to be creative in different ways to put pressure on the players. Should be real interesting to do.
Just a heads up to everyone. I've got a new Sci-Fi RPG all worked up and ready to start as soon as I finish up with the Crimson Rose and get a few work deadlines out of the way. I'm thinking to open it the second week of august or so. It'll be based on a short story I posted a snipped of here. Here is the first half of the lead in: In a distant future, the gap between man and the stars has been bridged. The expanse of the galaxy was found to be more alive and more hostile than previously imagined. But the discovery of a new energy source continues to drive human kind deeper and deeper into the depths of the void; and further into the realm of the mysterious Specters that claim it as their own. More than an energy source, the crystal shards that brave souls venture into the depths of the galaxy for emit a unique radiation that interacts with the universe at the sub-quantum level. Harnessing these shards and tuning their energies can produce massive amounts of power and generate fields with unique and advantageous properties. These properties make the shards incredibly valuable commodities to governments and to trading organizations. It is the for the chance at unbelievable wealth that the Shard Seekers risk their lives to harvest shards from the space faring creatures that live on the outer rim of the galaxy. They venture alone or in small groups to trap the more mundane shard baring life forms while avoiding the more dangerous ones and especially the questionably sentient Specters whose raids have become more frequent in recent times. Letting me know that your interested might help motivate me to finish it off and get it posted up faster
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Losthawken, that sounds like it should be interesting! I'm not sure though, with PAX and also, if I decide to make my planned RPG go ahead, if I'll be able to take part.
