I would agree though that just adding rules wouldn't really change a whole lot... Because unless there was threat of consequences it wouldn't really be effective. And I don't like the idea of there being disciplinary actions taken against players who loose interest. It seems very ooc for rp.
Good points, everyone I've mentioned this before a long while ago but I think it might be beneficial to have a brand-new "Guidelines to Role-Playing" or a "FAQ" section filled with RP lingo, what a Role-Play is, what is expected, ect... I've had people in the past here on Writing Forums ask what RPing is all about, and I think if we provided a definition for them, in simple terms how we do things, that would be really helpful to the ones that don't know what the heck RPing is, or how to participate. I think people tend to shy away from something that appears too out of their comfort zone, though we all know the real secret here....it's a whole lot of fun! I'm sure one of us could do it and even very creatively (*cough*Pheonix's recent field guide thing*cough*) Just throwing that out there for ya'll.
Main issue though is to make the newcomers read the thing. As an example, when I arrived I didn't bothered to read any rule or FAQ
Maybe if it's written creatively though instead of step 1, step 2..., it would draw more interest? I was just thinking of the ones that don't know what RPs are (I know it's a crazy thought if people haven't heard of them lol) But they might be a little lost....and that might help them out
Well its really simple. Why would we need to go further than the basics? IC= In character play thread OOC=Out of character discussion thread That is pretty much all we need to tell new people. That and tell em they should be in at least one rp made by someone else before they try making one. The rest of the stuff they can learn by playing.
So, I think I can officially say that I am the new Mod of RP (with Losthawken still being a mod of course. He just isn't gonna be around as much it sounds like). And as such, I am wondering if there is anything that you guys would suggest right away that you'd like to see done around here?
Okay, well I did know that. But how to do it is the question... :/ And I was talking like immediate 'things i have control over' kind of stuff lol
But then is not an "inmediate thing you have control over" In that case... Change all the current roleplays's names to Batman.
So what, I for one can do that well enough when I'm perfectly sober, thank you very much … I just made myself sad.
I just want to add my opinion in here, please don't take it the wrong way. I'm sorry if what I say comes off sounding terrible, that's not my intention at all. I spent a little time writing with you all, perhaps a week in total. I want to give you a view of what it was like as an outsider joining in on an RPG. There is more to RPG then just advertising, one of the most important things you can do after luring your elusive new member to the RPG section you have to give them reasons to stay. Games are of course a great start, active games with a good sturdy member base are important, but there is something more vital then that when writing in a co-op type situation this thing is encouraging that member to stay on. Make sure that your character interacts with yours and is warmly accepted into the group. I don't mean that the newbie's character should have a starring role, just give them what they came to the forum for comradeship and the opportunity to write with others as a team. Again this wasn't meant to offend, but to help.
Advertising is just to have a wide variety. Your point is something we always try to make. Though if people loses interest it could mean that something may be failing there, though that's for some players only. In my case at least, I'm usually focused on doing something original or different, to the point I create very .... unorthodox stories, players drop usually, perhaps I'm not linking them in the correct way. But as you said, your view is of an outsider, we make sure always to do that.
@Cadavar sorry you felt that while in your time here. I remember when you were here. You played in VenShara with us for a little while right? In all honesty, I understand what you mean when thinking about that game. Everyone who was playing that had been together in like 3 other games before that that had been in a series and we were a bit... impenetrable. That being said though, I think overall we do a pretty good job of welcoming people and accepting them into the games. But, we can always do better. It can be hard to acknowledge everyone's posts in a game where there are a lot of players, or a really driving narrative... Thanks for the perspective cadavar. And you know you are always welcome here. If you come back, we'll do our level best to make you feel included, honest. (we also have cookies. )
Oh gosh, I didn’t mean for it to sound that bad. Believe me I do understand how easily writing can flow with an established group and that isn’t a terrible thing, it’s just hard to break into that when you’re new. I’m glad that you see where I was coming from inside a game, but otherwise I agree with you the members here do greet new members and I’ve never seen anyone being openly hostile, that’s not what I meant. It’s just giving the newbie a little taste of that magic that makes RPG so addictive
Why would you need to go further than the basics? Good question. I don't know about anyone else but the reason I ventured onto this forum was to learn to better my writing, first and foremost. It struck me some time back that my writing lacks one main feature, a certain spontaneity of thought during the creation process and I've been looking at ways to improve this. I'm fed up to my back teeth letting things 'simmer' and 'stew' for months at a time. I've given the RPG section a gander on several occasions. I wouldn't think for a moment of joining the ranks as it stands. Why? See above. Do you honestly think that's all I need to know? No matter how polite and courteous you feel yourselves to be, you simply aren't doing enough, in my opinion, to encourage new players. Despite wanting new blood, to some, it feels like the ranks are already closed. Like the above quote, there's an assumption that if you describe how it works, in essence, that's enough. Sorry to tell you guys, in my case it wasn't. I read the FAQ and Rules'n stuff. My first query. Why is the Gamesmaster info placed above all else? I had to scroll through so much guff that didn't remotely concern me as a prospective player. You may as well have hidden a diamond ring in a slurry tank. It really doesn't look like you wanted me to find it. Then, when I got to the bit that should have spoken to me...well, there's nothing there, is there? I would assume that a prospective Gamesmaster has been a player at some point, so why kick off the thread by preaching to the already converted? I'll be honest, that in itself made me feel you are less interested in reaching out to complete newcomers than filling the ranks with those who already have experience of RPGing. And, as a complete no-nothing, I find it exceedingly intimidating. Oh and check out the time-stamp? 2008? I think the FAQ needs a makeover.
Heh To be honest I think some of you are making this way to complex. But first off I’m going to admit I’ve been rping on here a long while now but I’ve never been really cared when we these sorts of talks. Not these sorts of talks and stuff are bad but I’m just bad at them. My very very good friend and writing partner recently gave me a rant on the FAQ itself and my face was pretty much that of a zombie the entire time. Not that I wasn't listening, I listened to her and what she said about FAQ. Soooooo why not just make a new FAQ? Let's do that! As for the other issues brought up. The ranks aren't so closed off I and at least four or five others came at a time when things were in full swing. And we all managed to become involved very quickly. But everyone was very nice and welcomed many of us when we were just starting. This is really one of the most friendly RPG places there is. We've always tried our best to make people feel accepted. But when it comes to making characters feel accepted I think that's a different issue. How well your character does in the game is a matter of .....well how much you involve yourself. Now please note this is from personal experience and what I've seen. How well your character does is pretty much based on two things. 1: Character itself 2: How you put them in the plot. Number one is pretty simple just do your best to make an interesting character with a story and personality that sticks. If its not working for you then either change up the character or make a new one or just keep going until it works. Number two is a bit more complex. I've seen rookies come here and just fail but I've also seen rookies come here and have huge roles. So why is this? Some people just make themselves known more. Every person here who came when things seemed like closed off are still here because they put effort in as new players to make their characters forces to be reckoned with in some form or another. So what of the ones that don't? Hmmm I won't say try harder but I will say can make it known that you just aren't limited the plots normally. Like if we make a new FAQ can we make it known that your allowed to do what you want with your character normally. Ya know? Like...... Have ideas for your character and what he'll do in the main story? Throw them at the GM and see what he says You want a side story for your character? Ask away!!! I'm probably not making any sense. But do you see my point maybe? Some people take an extra mile when they join it seems and others have trouble doing it. There needs to be a way in the FAQ or to let the ones who are new that they shouldn't be afraid to get DIRTY! Like they shouldn't afraid to involve themselves deeply or make themselves key in plot situations. Sorry if that was bad XD I'm not good at this stuff but I hope someone got what I was saying
