Considering the relatively small scope, would you prefer to make up your characters homeland up after having some basic information, have some set up to chose from, or a mixture of both.

I think for consistency's sake, having predestined setups to choose from would be better.

Would we be starting the story in our characters' homelands, or start upon entering the abandoned city?

Hi there. This is my first post here. I've been searching for a site like this for a while. I'm a writer of sorts and am working out the ideas of a few stories. The whole roleplay concept wasn't anything I ever really considered but it might be exactly what I need to get my story going.

THE PLOT: It's 1992. It takes place in Westport, a smallish, blue-collar mostly Irish-Catholic town right outside of Philadelphia. And it revolves around the O'Grady family.

The last names O'Grady and Ryan goes a long way in Westport. Joseph O'Grady, the patriarch in his 60s, is the mayor and local Republican party boss. He's been in power for two decades, honoring the family tradition of running the town. He grew up on the same block as his wife, Linda (Ryan) O'Grady. While not technically in office, she is a consiglieri of the highest order. She has helped steer and engineer many of her husband's moves through the years, particularly the more Machiavellian ones. She knows the power of passing a rumor along to a gabby store clerk or secretary as a way to embarrass anyone who may stand in their path. She and her husband are also staunch Catholics -- while the church overall is dwindling, the amount of older people in the town still keeps the local parish booming and a source of power.

However, a young upstart -- Matthew Bryant -- is making waves. A young liberal councilman, the 35-year-old Ivy League-educated lawyer fancies himself a reformer who would love to take down some of the machine. And why wouldn't he? His father, Jack, was a thorn in the O'Grady's side for years. The young man has loyalty from some corners in town and a recent tax hike has put Joseph in some trouble in the polls. A handsome young man with a beautiful wife and two twin daughters looks good on a campaign side.

Not helping matters are Linda's cousin Janet. While cousins, they were essentially raised in the same household, making them more like sisters. However, they could not be more opposite. Janet always was a free-spirit and unconcerned (and even scoffed at) with local politics. Whereas Linda is buttoned up and conservative, Janet took a few years off of her life to follow the Grateful Dead around town before moving back home a few years ago. They frequently and constantly bicker in the eternal chess game that can be family dynamics -- who is hosting this year, you'll go to Mass at this time because it fits our schedule best, etc. Linda, obviously, won more often than she lost.

Janet raised one son on her own, Jason. Now 19, Jason is in his second year at a nearby state commuter school that he attends on a full scholarship. Bookish and nerdy, Jason recently came to terms with being a homosexual, after years of struggling with the issue. While his mom was very liberal and barely cared about religion, Jason always enjoyed going to mass. And while he also agreed with his mom's politics... He certainly saw the advantages and benefits that his Uncle Joe and Aunt Linda had in life from having power. After all, his uncle pounded a few desks after all so Jason wouldn't have to pay for college.

Joseph and Linda catch wind of Jason's sexuality. And they are aghast -- and not just because of their Catholicism. Or, barely because of their Catholicism. If word got out about Jason's sexuality, it could -- would -- threaten their grip on local power. That damn Janet, never willing to lay down the law on that boy of hers. Now look.

There is a Sunday family function (filled with a multitude of cousins and family flunkies.) And Linda pulls Jason aside. How dare he. How dare he put the family name at risk. Why, if he was her son, she'd drag him by the ear and bring him to Monsignor McNeil immediately so he could put some sense into you. Don't you know what we've ever done for you? Janet hears this and more words are exchanged. Janet and Jason leave, but not before Linda tells them that one day, they'll see how right she is.

It's a few weeks later. Jason is at college. He's tried to put this away from him, but he sees the local newspaper and the article about his Uncle Joe's poll numbers and the fight for his life. Jason's overcome with guilt and gets in his car and drives to his Uncle and Aunt's house. He rings the bell and wants to talk.
    ***

I would play as Jason in this. Was looking for someone to play as Joseph and Linda, and how this would be intertwined with both the political dynamic and also the interpersonal family drama as well.

    Thanks!

Hi PhillyWriter! Welcome to the forums. You should saunter over to the New Member Introductions forum so the rest of the site can meet you. It's a good place to start, and meet some of the other members.

Hello everyone. After quite some time of being off the forums, I decided to come back on again and sort of get involved again. One part of my plan is starting up an RPG again. So, I have three ideas that I'm going to place here, and I suppose I'll just see which one gets enough votes to actually start it up.

First, there was my most successful RPG on writingforums, which was a superhero RPG set in the city of Atlantis. However, this is a modern Atlantis, recreated on a manmade island in the middle of the Atlantic. It is a huge city, with its various problems. To combat this, a superhero (which I will be making) has set out to find other heroes and create a squad to fight the city's problems, villains, and disasters. The RPG will be set in chapters, as the original was, with each chapter lasting some time and centered around a villain or 2.
Also, I will be very strict on powers. I will allow 1, maybe 2 major powers, as well as a few minor powers. Last time, I had a character who only had 1 major power, but he manipulated it so well he ended up being able to literally do anything. I will NOT allow this to happen, and will not hesitate to DM override and kill off the character.

My second idea was also successful, but it died after some of the players went missing for long periods of time. If anyone knows the shows Zoids and Gundam, it is roughly based on that idea, with some tweaks. There are three distinct types of robots in this roleplay: Gunners, Close Combat, and Animal (the names will be changed). The plot centers around, you guessed it, a war. There are three countries involved, one of which is trying desperately not to get involved, but continues to be at the border of the warzone.

The final idea is a school, where a scientist has come up with a way to transfer ideas into powers. The machine is being tested on willing and unwilling teenagers, and they are given powers based on characters from TV shows and movies. This one was an idea but never took off at all.

Let me know which idea you like. I'll get to work on one as soon as it gets enough interest.

If you ask me, there's enough people playing the other rp, the Tarnished City one, that they would gladly join yours. You should maybe work on it in the mean time while you wait for volunteers, so you can just submit it when you're ready.

Plus, I'm just super eager to join it, lol.

Well, that's 3 so far. I'll start working on it. Crow, please no villains. I understand what you're saying, try to keep it to the level of "making questionable decisions" or the gray area

Damn, I was hoping to make a villain. Anyway, I'm in as well, and if you want to join the current RP that I'm running, feel free to hop in. It's just about to get properly started.

Well, it was quick and easy, and I added some districts to the game to give some more flavor to the island, rather than just being "A big city." Just have to wait for approval, and then we'll get started!!!
